ELLSWORTH—The Hancock County Sheriff’s Department announced last week that Chief Deputy William Birch has been appointed to the Maine Substance Use Disorder Services Commission by Governor Janet Mills.

According to the department, “This appointment recognizes Chief Deputy Birch’s dedication to public service and his commitment to addressing the challenges of substance use in our communities. As a member of the commission, he will help guide statewide efforts to improve prevention, treatment, and recovery services for individuals and families affected by substance use disorders.”


BAR HARBOR AND MOUNT DESERT POLICE LOGS

The following incidents occurred in Bar Harbor and Mount Desert last week according to the Bar Harbor and Mount Desert Police Department police logs, which is publicly released information.


Tuesday, November 4, 2025

Sgt. Doug Brundrett responded to a report of gunshots in Hulls Cove and determined that it was a resident engaging in safe target practice.

Officer Ted Cake assisted the Bar Harbor Fire Department with a medical call in Bar Harbor.

Officer T. Cake transported someone in Bar Harbor to their residence at the person’s request.

Officer T. Cake performed some vehicle identification number verifications in Bar Harbor.

After receiving a motor vehicle complaint regarding a vehicle being operated in an erratic manner in Bar Harbor, Officer T. Cake located the vehicle and stopped it. The operator was found to be not impaired but was warned for their vehicle operation.

Officer Liam Harrington served a Mount Desert resident with a protection order.

Officers responded to a Mount Desert residence for a reported domestic disturbance. Officers determined that no physical assault had occurred.


Wednesday, November 5, 2025

Following a traffic stop in Bar Harbor, Officer Justin Burnett arrested Michael Karnas, of Brewer, for operating after suspension. Karnas was transported to the Hancock County Jail.

Someone in Bar Harbor reported a barking dog and the dog’s owner was made aware of the complaint.

Officer Amie Torrey is investigating a report of a vehicle that passed a stopped school bus on Route 3 in Bar Harbor.

Officer Torrey performed a requested well-being check in Mount Desert and found the subject to be fine.

Officer Troy Stanwood received a motor vehicle complaint in Bar Harbor but was unable to locate the described vehicle.

Officer Stanwood issued someone a no trespassing warning for a Bar Harbor campground.

An employee of a Mount Desert business reported that a building tenant walked through the business. Officer Caleb Mora told the complainant that this issue was not a crime.

Officer Nathan Formby and the department’s mental health liaison responded to a report of a person in Bar Harbor who was having a mental health crisis.

Sgt. Chris Dickens assisted in connecting someone in Bar Harbor who was experiencing mental health symptoms with an involved family member.


Thursday, November 6, 2025

Officer Lukas Keene removed multiple overnight campers in Bar Harbor and warned them for violating the town’s ordinance.

Officer Formby responded to a report of a tree blocking the roadway in Mount Desert. The tree was removed and the roadway reopened.

The Bar Harbor Police Department is “following up” on complaints of vehicles speeding on the Indian Point Road in Bar Harbor.

Officer Stanwood responded to a loose dog complaint in Mount Desert. A family member was able to get the dog back inside.

Officer Stanwood served someone in Bar Harbor with a protection order.


Friday, November 7, 2025

Officer Mora received a delayed motor vehicle complaint in Bar Harbor but the given registration did not match the vehicle description so no follow-up action could be taken.

Sgt. Dickens assisted a Bar Harbor resident who was having vehicle battery issues. They were not able to get the vehicle running.

Officer Mora took a social media harassment complaint from a woman in Bar Harbor. The harassment was taking place in another jurisdiction and the woman was referred to the proper agency.

Sgt. Dickens performed a “keep the peace” while people collected personal belongings at a Northeast Harbor residence.

Officer Zack Kline received a report of lights being on at a residence in Mount Desert which was supposed to be closed for the season. Officer Kline checked the exterior and the interior and found everything to be OK. He also found that the lights were not on when he arrived.

Officer Kaleb Payson took a complaint of a suspicious vehicle parked on a private road in Mount Desert. Officer Kline spoke with the operator of the vehicle and determined that they were on their family’s land and not doing anything suspicious.

Officer Kline took several reports regarding a man in the roadway on Route 102 in Bar Harbor. Officer Kline found the man to be intoxicated and gave him a ride home to Southwest Harbor.


Saturday, November 8, 2025

Officer T. Cake spoke with someone in Bar Harbor who had some questions about an animal issue.

Officer Harrington and Officer Michael Allen closed a section of Cottage Street in Bar Harbor for the annual bed races.

Officers responded to a domestic dispute in Bar Harbor, determined that the dispute was verbal in nature, and sent the involved people “to bed for the night.”


Sunday, November 9, 2025

Sgt. Brundrett located an open door at a Bar Harbor business and checked the business, finding nobody inside. Sgt. Brundrett notified the business keyholder and secured the business.

Officer Harrington spoke with someone in Bar Harbor regarding their concerns about several phone calls and text messages they had received.


Monday, November 10, 2025

Officer Kline responded to a downed tree on a power line in Mount Desert. Versant Power was notified and the Mount Desert Fire Department coned off the area for safety.

Officer Kline located a downed tree blocking Sound Drive in Mount Desert. Officer Kline and members of the Mount Desert Fire Department were able to move the tree from the roadway.


SOUTHWEST HARBOR AND TREMONT

The following incidents occurred in Southwest Harbor or Tremont last week according to the Southwest Harbor Police Department police log, which is publicly released information.


Monday, November 3, 2025

Officer Bradley Russell found a dog that was running loose in Tremont, took it to the Southwest Harbor Police Department where a Facebook post regarding the found dog was made, and the owner later retrieved the dog.

The Southwest Harbor Police Department received an alarm call in Southwest Harbor, contacted the keyholder, and the alarm was cancelled.

Hansen’s Outpost in Tremont reported a vehicle that had been parked in its parking lot for a few days to the Southwest Harbor Police Department but then called back to report that the vehicle had left.

Officer Russell received a report of a residential alarm in Southwest Harbor but the alarm was reported as a false alarm a few minutes later.


Tuesday, November 4, 2025

Officer Rick Graham gave a ride home to an elderly Southwest Harbor resident whose vehicle had broken-down.

Officer Graham spoke with a Southwest Harbor resident regarding a concern that the resident had and after speaking, it was determined that the concern was unfounded.

After receiving a report of a suspicious vehicle near a Tremont residence, Officer Graham checked on the vehicle and determined that it was okay.

Someone in Southwest Harbor informed the police department that their vehicle had broken-down and would be left in a parking lot overnight.


Thursday, November 6, 2025

After receiving a suspicious person complaint in Southwest Harbor, Officer James Kamorski responded and searched the area but could not locate the described person.


Friday, November 7, 2025

At the request of another law enforcement agency, Officer Russell attempted to locate someone who was believed to be in Southwest Harbor but was unsuccessful at locating the person.

Officer Russell assisted a Southwest Harbor resident with getting back into their apartment after they had locked themselves out.


Saturday, November 8, 2025

Officer Russell responded to a residential alarm in Southwest Harbor and talked with the property caretaker. The property was secure.

A Tremont resident was warned for criminal trespass in Southwest Harbor by Officer Graham after the property owner saw the person on the property via a security camera.

A Southwest Harbor resident reported that they had seen an unfamiliar vehicle leaving their property as they were returning. Officer Graham checked the area but was unable to find a vehicle matching the incomplete description.

Officer Graham performed a requested well-being check on a Southwest Harbor resident and found them to be okay.

Officer Graham gave a ride to a Southwest Harbor resident who was not properly attired for the weather.

Officer Russell responded to a residential alarm in Tremont, found nothing out of the ordinary, and found the house to be secure.
