TRENTON—So far this year, the Hancock County SPCA has hosted over 300 animals, taking care of them all, hoping to find them safe and loving homes.

That intake number is triple last year’s.

Just in 2020, Maine shelters took in 2,540 stray dogs, 2,271 surrendered dogs, and 6,131 dogs transferred from other areas. 97% of those were reclaimed or adopted.

For cats in the same year, shelters took in 6,813 stray cats, 6,237 surrendered cats, and 3,618 cats transferred from other areas. Of those cats, 85% were adopted and 5% were reclaimed.

This past week the SPCA of Hancock County had over a dozen kittens in its care. It also has adult cats and dogs there, waiting, hoping for homes.

The need never stops.

The need is constant and always there.

”Adoption events not only help local animals find homes, they raise awareness for other important topics like spaying/neutering, microchipping, and more. Adoption events are amazing opportunities for the community to support the animals and learn more about the services we provide our community,” said Development & Communications Coordinator Mariah Donovan. Additionally, some of our longest stay residents have found incredible homes during adoption events!”

And up for adoption are the Fab 5.

“The Fab 5 are…fab!” Donovon said.

But their lives? They weren’t always that way.

“The Fab 5 came into our care in August when we assisted the Maine State Animal Welfare Program in placing the dogs from an animal cruelty investigation,” Donovan said. “They all needed a tremendous amount of care.”

Care is what they got at the SPCA after they were rescued from the local animal cruelty case. The organization specializes in saving animals in many ways. The staff and volunteer nurse animals back to health, socialize them, give them a safe place until they can find their forever (or furever) homes.

“Since being with us, they have each gained at least 10 pounds, have received medical treatments specific to their conditions, and have received an enormous amount of love,” Donovan said. “Due to the situation, we don’t get to know too much about their histories, but we know they are each sweet, loving dogs seeking a place to finally call home.”

The five furry and fabulous dogs each have their own little quirks and personalities.

“Three of them are seniors, and two are only about 2 1/2 years old. Our senior friends, Loeb, Miriam, and Depp are on a Hill’s prescription diet,” she said.

Don’t let that scare you!

“Its easy to order from Chewy, your vet, and other online retailers,” she said. “They are very gentle, sweet, go-with-the-flow senior pups.”

The younger dogs, Blix and Xube, are full of puppy love..

“They have young dog energy. They want to play, explore, walk, run, and be with their human,” Donovan said.

Xube needs to be the only pet, and the other four have shown successful interactions with other animals at the shelter. While they all have unique needs and personalities, they all love humans and time spent giving and showing affection.

Last Saturday, eight animals found their furever homes at the October 5 Subaru Loves Pets adoption event.

”It is because of Subaru’s generosity and love for the animals that we are able to offer $75 adoptions to approved adopters during these events,” Donovan said.

There is another event this Saturday, featuring $75 adoptions, a free microchip clinic, face painting and more.

There will be cats, too, like this bonded pair: Chicken Nugget and French Fry
