SEPTEMBER 1 — Wabanaki and conservation leaders discuss land return and stewardship

The growing movement to return land, authority, and stewardship to Wabanaki communities is the focus of the final College of the Atlantic Coffee & Conversation of the summer on Tuesday, Sept. 1. Frances Soctomah of the Wabanaki Commission on Land and Stewardship will join Ellie Oldach ’15 and Brett Ciccotelli ’09 of First Light, a collective of non-Native land-oriented organizations working across Wabanaki homelands, for “Dawnland return: Wabanaki and conservation collaboration to return land and more.” The conversation will be moderated by Dr. Darren Ranco, Executive Director of the Wabanaki Commission and Chair of Native American Programs at the University of Maine.

The free talk takes place in the Thomas S. Gates, Jr. Community Center at 9:30 a.m. Registration is required at go.coa.edu/coffeeandconvo.

Our hope is to bring together local and visiting bird watchers and lovers for a social event. Join us every other Friday morning from 8:00 AM to 9:00 AM. Our museum shop will be open, offering a selection of baked goods from local cafes, restaurants, and caterers, along with coffee. Feel free to explore the trails as early as you like! After, relax in our courtyard and chat. The Oceanarium (museum and aquarium) opens at 9 AM.

SEPTEMBER 5 — International Folk Dance with the Kotwica Band

Join the Downeast Folk Dancers and the Kotwica Band at the MDI YWCA! Folk dances from the Baltic to the Black Sea and beyond will be taught with a live band, no experience or partner necessary.

At the MDI YWCA on September 5th, the Kotwica Band will play “music from the Baltic to the Black Sea and Beyond.” Dance teaching will be at 7:00-8:00pm and request dancing 8:00-9:00 will be led by experienced dancers. Learn dances from Armenia, Bavaria, Brittany, Bulgaria, Croatia, Greece, Hungary, Macedonia, Poland, Romania, Serbia, Sweden, and Ukraine. No experience and no partner is needed. Admission is $10 at the door.

On Saturday, September 5, the Festival Orchestra returns to St. Saviour’s Episcopal Church for performances at 10:30 a.m. and 7:30 p.m., led by Festival Principal Conductor David Alexander Rahbee and featuring pianist Pyotr Akulov, organist Daniel Pyle, and New Jersey Symphony Concertmaster Eric Wyrick leading the orchestra.

SATURDAYS! BABY AND ME YOGA!

PRAYER SHAWL MISSION GROUP

Prayer Shawl Mission from 10 a.m. to noon at the church located at 29 Mount Desert Street.

The intention of the group is to create a flow of Prayer Shawls for distribution for those in need due to illness, loneliness, loss or in need of comfort and to create a sense of community with those who have a shared interest.

From August 19 – October 17, It’s Not What You Look At, But What You See: William Hoyt, Ernest McMullen, Rett Sturman and David Vickery will be at the Gallery at Somes Sound

Featuring four New England realists responding to the world around them, with the distinct observation of accurate detail (light, form, and texture), while still capturing subjects often revealing the emotional depth beneath the surface of everyday life. It’s a disciplined practice of “seeing” rather than just looking, translating objective reality through personal perception.
