BAR HARBOR—Dogs dominated the Bar Harbor and Mount Desert Island scene this weekend. Mount Desert Island is considered a dog-friendly place by travel companies like Bring Fido. Outside Magazine said Acadia National Park was the most dog friendly in New England, but it was the local dogs that stole the show this weekend. BLESSING OF THE ANIMALS It began with the blessing of the animals on the Village Green. The event was organized by the Bar Harbor Congregational Church and Kiah Baxter. According to the church, “Join in a spirited celebration of our connection with the natural world, with a blessing of animals (two- and four-legged creatures welcome !), and a time to remember animal companions who have died. All creatures great & small welcome.” WAG! WALK! RUN! MARY PARKER RACE FOR ISLAND CONNECTIONS The 7th Annual Mary Parker Memorial Run, Walk, Wag 5k was in honor of Mary Parker, who was Island Connection’s transportation manager before she died from cancer. The event was on Saturday. Island Connections Winners received a $25 gift certificate from Wind and Wine by the Sea and a $50 gift certificate from Spruce & Gussy, which has supported the event for years. Wind and Wine by the Sea also sponsored the event. There was also some Pat’s Pizza at the end. Our earlier story on the event is here. Evan Boudreau was the fastest man. Kat Murphy was the fastest woman and her mom’s dog, Grace (Grace O’Malley, Pirate of Ann’s Point), was the fastest dog. The fastest walker was Janice Lowe. “Since the start of the COVID pandemic, we primarily offer free transportation to scheduled medical appointments as well as grocery shopping,” according to its website. “In addition, Island Connections delivers meals for the Meals on Wheels program on Mount Desert Island, as well as food boxes for the Food Access Project to residents of MDI and Trenton. With greater exposure to our services during the pandemic, we are becoming more recognized as a vital and critical service on MDI.” Kat and Grace!
