BAR HARBOR—A New Hampshire company, 2A TAC Air OPS, is heading to Bar Harbor this evening to help find a lost dog and found kindness and community.
The visit comes after the search and rescue drone used by the company has been recently shot at twice during searches for missing pets.
“I talked to a very nice woman named Vicky,” owner Rob Russell said in a social media video posted early on September 30. He spoke of Toby, a dark-colored and beloved family pet. “He doesn’t have much of a medical history other than this is an old dog.”
Victoria Eaton’s Toby went missing on Monday, September 29, in the vicinity of 244 Norway Drive in Bar Harbor. According to posts and friends of Eaton, Toby is deaf and a bit lame, but otherwise healthy.
Friends and strangers combed the area by Norway Drive where Eaton lives, Monday, by car and foot, many searching until darkness. The search continued on Tuesday.
“Wow,” Russell said in another video posted later, September 30, “people are kind.”
Russell is doing an evening search, tonight, Tuesday, which he said was possible because there wasn’t thermal loading from a hot day on Tuesday. Depending on the weather, thermal drones can quickly search multiple square miles in just a couple hours over all kinds of terrain.
To help defray expenses, the Cleftstone Inn gave a much reduced room cost for Russell and then C&R Carpet Cleaning paid half of that reduced cost, which allowed Russell to refund Eaton the much larger anticipated expense of a room in Bar Harbor in September, the equivalent of hundreds of dollars.
As Patricia Kavanagh said on Facebook, “Community love is amazing.”
Though the company is from New Hampshire, 2A TAC Air OPS has had multiple ventures into Maine. One of the more recent dog-rescue excursions involved Trenton resident Melissa Relyea whose eight-year-old lab mix Bobo ran off in the Orrington area. While searching for Bobo, Russell’s drone was shot at. It’s the second time that’s occurred.
Bobo had been boarded in Brewer when he escaped. He was missing for five days. Russell located him in the woods.
