Tremont Hosts First Responders Community Day
Sep 10, 2025

BAR HARBOR—The Bar Harbor Fire Department responded September 10, to a smoke smell inside Mount Desert Island High School that was discovered just before the start of the school day.
The smoke smell was strong enough to prompt a call out for mutual aid. Mount Desert, Southwest Harbor, Tremont Volunteer Fire Department, Trenton Volunteer Fire Department, and Ellsworth Fire Department also responded. Ellsworth responded with its rapid intervention team.
The smell also prompted a two-hour delay for the start of school.
The departments cleared by 8 a.m., and the school will maintain it’s two-hour delay schedule.
According to scanner traffic, the likely cause of the smell is a motor fan in the heating system. There was no fire.
