SOUTHWEST HARBOR—Gary Peters, 36, of Southwest Harbor, pled guilty today, September 9, in federal court to one count of possessing child pornography and two counts of receiving child pornography.
The plea came a day after Acting United States Attorney Craig Wolff filed an “amended prosecution version” of the events leading to the charge.
According to Wolff’s filing, “Peters knowingly received images of an actual minor, MV1, engaged in sexually explicit behavior involving lascivious display of the genitals.”
MVI stands for minor victim one.
“On (or) about October 29, 2023, Peters received images of MV2 over the internet and onto his cellular telephone using the same online messaging app,” Wolff’s brief said.
In March 2024, the FBI executed a search warrant at Peters’ home. At that time, agents allegedly found explicit images on his cellphone and laptop.
“Beginning no later than February 7, 2022, and continuing until March 27, 2024, in the district of Maine, Peters also possessed electronic devices, including cellular phones, laptop computers, and a desk top computer, with external and internal drives, that contained child pornography Peters had obtained over the internet,” Wolff’s brief continued.
Having plead guilty to the three counts, Peters could be sentenced for up to 20 years of prison and fines that reach a maximum of $250,000. He will likely have a supervised release.
