MOUNT DESERT—According to the Bar Harbor and Mount Desert Police Department’s weekly press release, on August 9, Officer Caleb Mora located debris in the roadway and a suspicious vehicle in Mount Desert.
Following an investigation, Officer Mora arrested Cody Hendrixson, 20, of Otter Creek, for allegedly violating his conditions of release, and charged Hendrixson with allegedly operating without a license, allegedly operating an unregistered motor vehicle, and allegedly operating a defective motor vehicle. Hendrixson was warned for other traffic violations and transported to Hancock County Jail.
The alleged passenger of the suspicious vehicle, Aiden Coombs, 21, of Otter Creek, was summonsed for allegedly permitting unlawful use and allegedly violating his conditions of release.
On July 19 of this year, Officer Judson Cake had attempted to perform a traffic stop on a truck in Bar Harbor. The truck did not stop and proceeded in the direction of Otter Creek at a high rate of speed. Officer Cake lost sight of the vehicle in the Village of Otter Creek and terminated his pursuit. The truck was located in Otter Creek the next day off Grover Avenue.
On July 22, Hendrixson had been charged with alleged eluding an officer, alleged failing to stop for an officer, alleged criminal speed, and alleged driving to endanger for the July 19 chase in Otter Creek.
On January 26 of this year, following a traffic stop in Bar Harbor, Officer Nathan Formby had arrested Coombs, for alleged operating under the influence and alleged violation of conditions of release.

Officer Liam Harrington responded to a noise complaint in Bar Harbor and determined that the party was not unreasonably loud but let the people know about the complaint.
Officer Shelby O’Neil spoke with someone in Bar Harbor about a trespassing issue.
Officer Amie Torrey is investigating a possible violation of a protection order in Bar Harbor.
After receiving a motor vehicle complaint in Bar Harbor, Officer O’Neil was unable to locate the suspect vehicle.
Officer Torrey received a complaint regarding a vehicle being left on someone else’s property in Bar Harbor and determined that it was a civil issue.
Officer Kevin Edgecomb worked a security detail for an event at College of the Atlantic in Bar Harbor.
Sgt. Chris Dickens requested extra patrols at the head of the island in Bar Harbor to address traffic infractions at the Route 3 and Route 102 intersection.
Officer Ted Cake attempted to locate a vehicle in Bar Harbor that was the subject of a motor vehicle complaint.
The Bar Harbor Police Department received a 911 call regarding a small child that had become separated from their family in Bar Harbor, but the child was located while the caller was still on the phone.

Sgt. Dickens responded to a report of a parked vehicle blocking the flow of traffic in Bar Harbor, but the vehicle had been moved prior to his arrival.

Officers responded with the Bar Harbor Fire Department to a report of a small brush fire in Bar Harbor, but the fire had been extinguished by people on scene.
Officer O’Neil assisted someone with printing a document in Mount Desert.
Officer Zack Kline stopped a vehicle for passing another vehicle in a construction zone in Bar Harbor. While the vehicle was stopped, the driver had a medical event. Officer Kline called for an ambulance, which responded, but the driver refused transport.
Officer Nathan Formby took an informational report in Bar Harbor.
Officer O’Neil attempted to locate a truck in Mount Desert that was reported to have people riding in the truckbed. She could not locate the truck.
Officer Formby responded to an animal complaint in Bar Harbor and determined that the animal in question was capable of walking adequately and he did not dispatch the animal.

After receiving a report of a man sitting on the railing of the Trenton Bridge, Officer Lukas Keene responded and found that the man was just watching the sunrise.
Officer Mora responded to a report of low hanging tree limbs in Somesville and notified the proper agency to rectify the situation.
Officer Kaleb Payson responded to a 911 call reporting people yelling on the village green in Bar Harbor but could not locate anyone yelling or being disorderly.
Officer Kline received a report of a car alarm going off in Mount Desert but could not locate any vehicles in the area reported with car alarms going off.
After a landlord in Bar Harbor requested that a tenant be removed, the property owner was advised by Officer Mora that it is a civil issue that has a process that needs to be followed.
Officer Mora performed a VIN (vehicle identification number) inspection in Bar Harbor.
After the Bar Harbor Police Department received a report of an unlicensed juvenile driving a vehicle, the vehicle and juvenile driver were located in another jurisdiction.
Officer Mora responded to a tree on a power line complaint in Mount Desert and referred it to the power company.
Someone reported to Officer Formby that their property had been stolen in Bar Harbor. The stolen property was returned to the owner soon after and no charges were filed.
Someone reported a suspicious truck on the side of the road in Mount Desert and Officer Keene determined that it was a renter taking care of their trash.
Following a complaint, an intoxicated person was assisted with finding a hotel room in Bar Harbor and warned not to drive.

Officer Formby assisted MDI Hospital with contacting someone in Bar Harbor.
Officer Formby warned some people in Bar Harbor for a town ordinance violation.
Officer T. Cake took a report of a theft in Bar Harbor and has no leads at this time.
Someone from out of state advised the Bar Harbor Police Department that he was in town as was required by his conditions of release.
Officer T. Cake spoke with someone in Bar Harbor who wanted to report some information.
Officer Torrey attempted to locate a reported possibly drunk driver in Mount Desert but could not find the vehicle.
After receiving some information in Bar Harbor and investigating that information, Officer T. Cake determined that a complaint was not legitimate.
Officer Payson assisted the National Park Service with a suspicious vehicle complaint in Bar Harbor.
While Officer Harrington was in Otter Creek, the Mount Desert Police Department took a report of gunshots. Officer Harrington believed them to be fireworks but could not locate the source.

Officer Judson Cake responded to a noise complaint in Bar Harbor and determined that it was unsubstantiated.
Officer Judson Cake fielded a 911 call to the Bar Harbor Police Department from a group of intoxicated people who claimed that their UBER driver had cancelled and had advised them to call 911 and ask for a ride to their campground. Officer Cake denied the request but explored other options with the caller.
Officer Payson responded to a noise complaint in Bar Harbor and determined that it was unsubstantiated.
Officer T. Cake placed a 72-hour violation on a vehicle in Mount Desert following a parking complaint.
Officer Torrey received a report of illegal parking in Bar Harbor.
Officer Torrey responded to a littering complaint and found no trash.
Someone attempted to drop off items for a family member at the Bar Harbor Police Station and was advised to make other arrangements “due to the ongoing situation.”
Officer T. Cake took a noise complaint in Mount Desert and told the complainant that the police department would add extra patrols to the area.
Officer O’Neil responded to a report of two women arguing in Bar Harbor and determined that they were family members having a misunderstanding and that they were all set.
Officer T. Cake issued three people trespass warnings for a property in Mount Desert.
After receiving a report of someone passed out on the property of a Bar Harbor business, that person was evaluated by the Bar Harbor ambulance. The person refused transport. He was given a ride back to his residence by Officer O’Neil.
After receiving a report of children on a fire escape in Bar Harbor, Officer Harrington determined that the children were actually adults who were attending an event at that location.
Officer Harrington responded to a report of transient people possibly trespassing in Bar Harbor and determined that they were not trespassing.

Officer J. Cake responded to a noise compliant in Mount Desert and located a group of people sitting around a fire pit who he determined were not being loud. After alerting the group to the complaint, they decided to go inside just to be polite.
Officer Harrington responded to a noise complaint in Bar Harbor that he determined was unsubstantiated.
The Mount Desert Police Department received a motor vehicle complaint, but the vehicle was heading toward the head of the island, and there were no officers in a position to intercept the vehicle.
Officer Torrey assisted the Southwest Harbor Police Department with attempting to find someone in Bar Harbor.
Officer T. Cake responded to a report of a broken-down vehicle on Route 102 in Mount Desert that was partially in the travel lane and, after locating the vehicle, called for a tow truck to come and remove it.
Officer Torrey responded to a report of a suicidal woman in Bar Harbor and transported her to MDI Hospital for an evaluation.
Someone reported a missing child to the police department in Bar Harbor, but the child was located before the police could respond.
Officer Torrey is investigating a report of suspicious activity near a vehicle in Mount Desert.
After receiving a report of a loose dog in Bar Harbor, Officer Torrey located the owner and reunited them with the dog.
Officer Payson received a report of someone possibly defecating in public in Bar Harbor but failed to locate anyone attempting such activities.
After receiving a parking complaint, Officer Payson placed a 72-hour violation notice on a vehicle in Bar Harbor.
Officer J. Cake responded to a report of a vehicle on the side of the road in Mount Desert with its hazard lights on and found a note on the windshield stating that the vehicle, which was out of the roadway, had broken down and would be towed soon.

Someone reported that their bicycle had been stolen from a Bar Harbor business and then called back to report that he had found his bike and wished to cancel his initial report.
Officer Mora performed a requested well-being check in Bar Harbor and found the person to be okay.
Officer T. Cake responded to a report of suspicious activity by a Bar Harbor business but could not locate any suspicious activity.
Officer T. Cake spoke with someone in Bar Harbor who had questions regarding a dispute with their neighbor.
Someone called the Mount Desert Police Department to report some information.
Officer Formby documented some information at the request of a Mount Desert resident.

Officer Keene responded to a complaint of construction starting too early in Bar Harbor and the contractors stopped work until the legal starting time as allowed by town ordinance.
Officer O’Neil performed traffic control until a tow truck could remove a broken-down vehicle from the travel lane of a roadway in Bar Harbor.
Someone in Bar Harbor reported a theft by a fellow employee and after hearing the complaint, Officer Kline advised that no theft had taken place.
Officer O’Neil had vehicle owners move their vehicles in Northeast Harbor after receiving a complaint that the vehicles were blocking a road.
Officer Payson conducted a VIN verification in Bar Harbor.
Officer Kline performed a requested well-being check in Bar Harbor and found the person to be fine.
Officer Kline responded to a a dogs-in-a-vehicle complaint in Bar Harbor and the vehicle was gone when he arrived.
A motor vehicle complaint made in Bar Harbor was passed on to the Hancock County Sheriff’s Department because no officers in Bar Harbor were in a position to find the vehicle.

Officer Harrington responded to a report of a suspicious man on the roof of a Bar Harbor business and found that he was cleaning the ventilation system.
Officers responded to a report of a fistfight in one of the bathroom facilities at Blackwoods Campground and determined that it was a mutual combatant situation between two future in-laws. The case was turned over to Acadia National Park rangers.
Multiple vehicles were moved along from areas of downtown Bar Harbor for violating the overnight camping in vehicles municipal ordinance.
Officer T. Cake responded to a noise complaint in Bar Harbor and found the noise to not be in violation of the town’s noise ordinance.
Matthew Egenstafer, 18, of Kentucky, was driving a 2002 GMC pickup south on Eden Street and William Keene, 43, of Maine, was driving a 2011 Nissan SUV also heading south on Eden Street in Bar Harbor. Egenstafer allegedly illegally merged left and struck Keene’s vehicle. There were no reported injuries. Both vehicles received damage. Damage was to the rear driver’s side corner of the GMC and the front passenger’s side corner of the Nissan. Egenstafer was summoned for alleged operating an unregistered vehicle and alleged failure to provide insurance.
Someone reported that someone else attempted to gain entry into a cargo trailer in Bar Harbor. It was determined that nothing was missing.
Officer Mora arrested Aaron Higgins, 41, no hometown given, on an active arrest warrant in Bar Harbor. Higgins was transported to the Hancock County Jail.
John Parker, 78, of Florida and Maine, was driving a 2007 Yamaha motorcycle west on Cottage Street in Bar Harbor when he allegedly struck two pedestrians. Parker and one of the pedestrians were transported to MDI Hospital for non-life-threatening injuries. The second pedestrian was also injured but not transported to the hospital. The motorcycle suffered functional damage.
Officer Mora responded to a dog-in-a-vehicle complaint in Bar Harbor and found the dog to be outside of the vehicle when he arrived.
Someone reported that they were in possession of two loose dogs that they had found in Bar Harbor and had made contact with the dog’s owner and had made arrangements to get the dogs home.
Officer Torrey received a complaint of kids riding bicycles and misbehaving in Mount Desert.
Officer Mora took a report of abandoned property on private property in Bar Harbor. The property is waiting to be retrieved by the owner.
Officer Mora is investigating a report of a stolen bicycle in Bar Harbor.
Officer Mora took a report of property damage in Bar Harbor. The incident is being reviewed by the District Attorney’s Office for possible prosecution.

Officer Torrey responded to a report of a broken-down motor vehicle in Mount Desert but it was gone when she arrived.
Sgt. Sundberg spoke with a Bar Harbor business about suspicious phone calls that they were receiving.
Officer Elias Burne investigated a report of a dog bite at MDI Hospital in Bar Harbor. The report was from the hospital and did not occur at the hospital.
Officer Payson investigated a suspicious vehicle at a Bar Harbor property and advised the complainant to have the property owner have the vehicle towed if they wish.

Officer T. Cake responded to a barking dogs complaint in Mount Desert, located the source of the noise, and left a printed warning for the owners advising them of the town’s barking dog ordinance.
Officer Torrey received a report of harassment in Bar Harbor but deemed that the behavior did not rise to the level of harassment.
Officers took a motor vehicle complaint in Mount Desert but could not locate the vehicle in question.
Sgt. Sundberg spoke with a Bar Harbor organization regarding a transient person.
Officer O’Neil attempted to serve paperwork to someone in Bar Harbor but they were not home.
Following an investigation, Aaron Kilpatrick, 43, of North Carolina, was arrested by Officer O’Neil in Bar Harbor for alleged unlawful sexual touching, class D. Kilpatrick was transported to the Hancock County Jail.
Officer Payson investigated a report of an arrow lodged into a Mount Desert residence. Officer Payson determined that juveniles had accidentally shot the arrow at the residence.
Officer Burne responded to a report of gunshots in Bar Harbor and found that it was roofers at a construction site.
Christopher Yalley, 31, of Orono, was driving a 2015 Hyundai Sonata south on Route 3 in Bar Harbor when the vehicle suffered a tire blowout. The blowout caused the vehicle to leave the roadway to the right, go down an embankment, and strike a tree. Yalley was evaluated at the scene by medical personnel and not transported but his passenger was transported to the hospital for minor injuries. The vehicle had to be towed due to disabling front end damage.
Officer Harrington had to utilize “forcible entry tools” to free someone who was trapped in a bathroom in Bar Harbor due to a malfunctioning door lock.

The Bar Harbor Police Department is investigating potential taxi violations.
The Bar Harbor Police Department received a report of a motor vehicle driving aggressively. The vehicle was leaving the island and the complaint was passed on to neighboring agencies.
Officer Keene gave a heavily intoxicated man a ride back to his residence in Mount Desert.

After investigating a reported fight at a Bar Harbor business, Justin Chipman, 29, of Ellsworth was summoned for alleged assault and Micheal Muldrow, 27, of Bar Harbor, was arrested for alleged violation of conditions of release. Muldrow was transported to the Hancock County Jail.
Officer Stanwood responded to a noise complaint on Main Street in Bar Harbor, but all involved people had dispersed prior to his arrival.
Sgt. Sundberg took a report of a dog in a vehicle in Bar Harbor but the caller called back and stated that the vehicle had left right after they called the first time.
Officer Kline is investigating a report of a flower box from the Somesville bridge being pushed into the creek below.
Officers responded to a medical call in Mount Desert, but the patient was stable upon arrival and no medical aid was needed.

Following a traffic stop in Bar Harbor, Officer Keene arrested Ethan Maszcenski, 30, of Windham, for alleged possession of schedule Z drugs (two charges) and alleged violation of conditions of release.
Sgt. Sundberg spoke with someone from another town who felt that they were being harassed by a Bar Harbor resident.
A woman in Mount Desert called the police department and reported that she felt another driver was possibly following her and tailgating her. She then called back to report that the vehicle was no longer behind her.
Officer Kline summoned Brayden McDougall, 31, of Bangor, for theft in Bar Harbor with a value of $28.

Officer Bradley Russell issued Alexandra Loftus, 41, of Southwest Harbor, a summons for alleged harassment by telephone or electronic device. Loftus was also arrested by Officer Russell for alleged violation of conditions of release.

After receiving a 911 call about an argument in Southwest Harbor, Officer Russell responded but could not locate anyone in the area.
Officer Russell responded to a parking complaint in Southwest Harbor but could not locate any parking issues when he arrived.
Officer Russell received a report of a deceased deer on the shoulder of a Southwest Harbor road, responded, and confirmed the location of the deer, and notified the proper department to remove the deer.
Officer Russell received a report of a vehicle being operated in an erratic manner in Southwest Harbor.

The Southwest Harbor Police Department received a report of a dog bite that occurred at the Seawall Picnic Area and the caller was advised to call the park service. Officer Graham did contact the dog’s owner and secure proof of rabies vaccination.

Maine State Police Assisting Buxton PD with an Assault Investigation
On Thursday, August 7, 2025, at approximately 3:20 a.m., the Buxton Police Department received a 911 call for an assault that occurred at 204 A Long Plains Road. Buxton Police, Gorham Police, and the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office responded and located a male with laceration wounds. The male was transported to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
The Buxton Police Department requested the assistance of the Maine State Police Major Crimes Unit–South. The Maine State Police and the Buxton Police Department are investigating the circumstances surrounding the assault. There is no danger to the public. More details will be released as they become available.
Department of Public Safety Establishes Statewide Elder Justice Investigator Role with Federal Grant
With federal funding from the Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant (JAG), the Maine Department of Public Safety has established a new statewide Elder Justice Investigator position to help address the rising and often complex crimes targeting Maine’s older adults. Kennebunk Police Officer Candice Simeoni has been selected to serve in this new role. With extensive experience in law enforcement and a deep commitment to supporting vulnerable populations, Simeoni will work with departments across Maine to enhance elder justice investigations, to strengthen the identification, investigation, and prosecution of elder abuse and exploitation cases.
The Elder Justice Investigator will:
• Provide case mentorship and investigative assistance to departments handling elder crime cases
• Offer training and education to frontline responders using current Maine Criminal Justice Academy curriculum and specialized elder justice content
• Promote a multidisciplinary approach to elder abuse cases, connecting agencies to tools, best practices, and community resources
• Collect and analyze quantitative and qualitative data on elder crime trends, outcomes, and needs, helping inform future policy decisions
• Support statewide efforts to expand the Hub and Spoke model for elder crime investigations.
This Hub and Spoke Model was listed as a top priority by the Elder Justice Partnership in the Maine Elder Justice Roadmap. The position is part of a pilot project aimed at improving elder justice responses in Maine and is supported by data collection, public input, and direct collaboration with departments. Officer Simeoni will also host Elder Justice focus groups and provide ongoing support through both in-person and virtual mentorship. The first-year contract for the pilot program is $150,000 and runs from July 15, 2025, to September 30, 2026. The position is now active and operational, with work already underway. The pilot program is expected to span two years.
Investigation Leads to Discovery of Deceased 3-year-old Child in Milford
In the evening of Aug 9, 2025, members of the Penobscot County Sheriff’s Office (PCSO) responded to a local business in Milford and located a 3-year-old female child deceased inside a vehicle. The vehicle was owned by the child’s mother, 40-year-old Kelly Brown of Havertown, Pennsylvania. Kelly Brown was located nearby and was detained by law enforcement. Kelly Brown and her child had been subjects of an earlier issued attempt to locate and check their well-being at the request of concerned family members.
Once the child’s death was discovered, PCSO requested Maine State Police / Major Crimes Unit North’s assistance with the investigation. Detectives and members of the Maine State Police Evidence Response Team responded to conduct an investigation in partnership with PCSO.
At approximately 5:00 a.m., on Aug 10, 2025, Kelly Brown was arrested by the Maine State Police and charged with the crime of manslaughter. Kelly Brown was booked at the Penobscot County Jail pending her appearance at the Penobscot Judicial Center.
The child was transported to the Office of Chief Medical Examiner in Augusta, where an autopsy was performed on August 11, 2025, to determine the cause and manner of death. The deputy chief medical examiner reported that the cause and manner of death were currently pending additional studies, but that hyperthermia (an elevated body temperature) was consistent with the symptoms presented and was the most likely cause of death based on the current information.
On August 11, 2025, Kelly Brown had an initial appearance at the Penobscot Judicial Center, where she was formally charged with the crime of manslaughter, and bail was set.
Maine State Police Investigating Homicide in Waldoboro
On Saturday, August 9, 2025, at approximately 8:25 a.m., the Waldoboro Police Department received a 911 call from a person checking on the well-being of a female residing on the Genthner Road in Waldoboro. Waldoboro Police Officers and Lincoln County Sheriff Deputies responded to the residence and located a deceased adult female.
The Waldoboro Police Department requested assistance from the Maine State Police Major Crimes Unit-Central, which responded and initiated an investigation. The deceased was transported to the Office of Chief Medical Examiner in Augusta, where an autopsy was conducted on Sunday afternoon, August 10, 2025.
The victim has been identified as 53-year-old Levern Kelley of Waldoboro. The manner of death has been ruled a homicide. The cause of death is not being released at this time. There is no known danger to the public. The investigation is ongoing, and no further details are available. Updates will be provided when appropriate.
Maine State Police Investigating Fatal Crash on I-295 in Bowdoinham
On Sunday, August 10, 2025, at approximately 4:06 p.m., multiple reports of a fire were reported on Interstate 295 at mile 37 southbound in the town of Bowdoinham. Responding units found a vehicle off the roadway in the median where the fire was located. The preliminary investigation indicates the vehicle, driven by an adult male, was traveling southbound when it left the roadway and entered the median. The vehicle struck several trees at a high rate of speed and caught fire.
The driver has been identified as Nicholas Disy, 52, of Milford, Pennsylvania.
No other vehicles were involved. Anyone who witnessed the crash is asked to contact the Maine State Police at 207.624.7076.
