BAR HARBOR FIRE DEPARTMENT

To check if Bar Harbor Fire Department is currently hiring, please go to the town’s jobs page.

But even if it isn’t, you can become a call member

Becoming a call force firefighter requires extensive training, hard work, and dedication to the community. We rely on call force firefighters to respond quickly to emergencies, to perform firefighting duties, and to provide assistance and support to career firefighters. To be a fall force firefighter is to have a chance to aid and serve the community, which is an extremely rewarding experience.

Saving Heritage Apples on MDI

The Bar Harbor Garden Club is pleased to present “Saving Heritage Apples on MDI” with Todd Little-Siebold, professor of history, College of the Atlantic, on April 13 at 1 p.m. at Birch Bay Retirement Village, 25 Village Inn Road, Bar Harbor. Over the last 14 years, Todd Little-Siebold, has been on a mission to rediscover abandoned apple orchards in Maine and to propagate apple varieties long absent from the state’s agricultural records and food supply. With the help from COA students, and his research team, Todd has been cloning heirloom apples through the process of grafting to save these heritage varieties and bring them back for our eating pleasure. Tracking down old applies is like a treasure hunt. They tell a story about our Maine history through examples of the loss of agriculture and what could happen in the future. This presentation is one of the monthly programs offered by the Bar Harbor Garden Club to the public. We do ask club members and guests to make a reservation by emailing Jane Sanderson, president@barharborgardenclub.org, or calling 460-8496. Please register early, as there is a limited capacity of 40 for the in-person meeting at Birch Bay Village due to COVID-19 protocols.

ADOPTING ANTON: A SINGLE MAN SEEKS A SON IN UKRAINE

Please join us at the Jesup Memorial Library for an author talk with Robert Klose who will be discussing his book Adopting Anton: A Single Man Seeks a Son in Ukraine on Thursday, April 20th at 7 p.m.

Robert Klose’s book Adopting Anton: A Single Man Seeks a Son in Ukraine tells of his experiences as a single adoptive father attempting a second international adoption in the shadow of 9/11. Single women have a long and successful track record as adoptive parents, but single men seeking to adopt have had a tougher time of it. And yet the need for role models in this regard exists, if for no other reason than to offer hope to those men who want to adopt but are

daunted by the seeming immensity of the challenge. Available children tend to live in countries that are both traditional and conservative and think in terms of “mother and child” but rarely “father and child”

Presuming that his already being an adoptive parent (he had previously adopted a boy from a Russian orphanage) would make a second attempt easier, Robert Klose was nevertheless confronted by a Ukrainian bureaucracy hobbled by its Soviet origins, as well as the vagaries of personalities in whose hands his fate would rest. The result is a harrowing narrative full of characters both picaresque and sympathetic, with all the actors, including the author, playing their roles in the chaotic aftermath of the 9/11 terrorist attacks. Adopting Anton is the story of a single man determined to bring a five-year-old boy to a new home in America, but not knowing, until the last moment, whether his efforts would result in failure or success.

Robert Klose teaches at the University of Maine. He is a regular contributor of essays to the Christian Science Monitor. His work has also appeared in Newsweek, The Boston Globe, and various literary magazines. His books include Adopting Alyosha — A Single Man Finds a Son in Russia, Small Worlds — Adopted Sons, Pet Piranhas, and Other Mortal Concerns, The Three- Legged Woman & Other Excursions in Teaching, The Legend of the River Pumpkins, and the novel, Long Live Grover Cleveland, which won a 2016 Ben Franklin Literary Award and a USA BookNews Award, and Life on Mars, which was a finalist in the International Book Awards, American Fiction Awards, and American Book Fest. He is also a four-time winner of the Maine Press Association award for Opinion writing.

This event is a hybrid program and registration is required to attend either in person or on Zoom. Register at jesuplibrary.org/events/anton or email eventsignup@jesuplibrary.org.

ART AT THE JESUP

Stop by the Jesup Memorial Library during the month of April to see the artwork of Roberta Sprague on display.

Roberta Sprague was born and raised in a quiet suburb of New York City and moved to Maine shortly after receiving her BFA from Syracuse University School of Art in 1970.  She became interested in special needs children while sharing art with them, and, as a result, worked with children with communication disorders for many years. Retired from teaching, Roberta continues to explore, make and sell her art.  She and her husband live on Mount Desert Island.

Light and color are elusive qualities, offering ever-changing patterns that vary with the moment of branches and shadows through the landscape, with the seasons, the time of day, and the weather. Roberta’s work is about looking for shapes and designs in nature and expressing those layers of color, light, and pattern.

Felting a Pet Portrait with Kat McClelland

In this two day workshop we will be working with both needle and wet felting techniques to create a unique animal portrait. Participants will bring their own reference material to the class. The first day of the workshop we will spend three (3) hours building a fun colorful background. The second day of the workshop we will spend the day creating the animal portrait. (with a 30 minute break for lunch) We will use our reference material to establish a rough outline of the animal and then, using needle felting, layer the wool to create a touchably soft portrait. THIS CLASS IS SUITABLE FOR ALL LEVELS!
