Things to Do In Bar Harbor

Week of November 6, 2022

Carrie Jones

It’s our weekly round-up and I may have missed some things so apologies!

I’m just one person and very imperfect, so some weeks there will be more news than others as I try to fit things around my editing novels, podcasting, and writing my own books and actually making a living, but here you go!

BE A COMMUNITY HERO

To check if Bar Harbor Fire Department is currently hiring, please go to the town’s jobs page.

But even if it isn’t, you can become a call member

Becoming a call force firefighter requires extensive training, hard work, and dedication to the community. We rely on call force firefighters to respond quickly to emergencies, to perform firefighting duties, and to provide assistance and support to career firefighters. To be a fall force firefighter is to have a chance to aid and serve the community, which is an extremely rewarding experience.

The Summit Project – 3rd Annual Online Auction (WEEK 1)

The Summit Project tries to answer one question: How can we as a community of Mainers come together and ensure that our state’s post 9/11 fallen heroes are NOT forgotten?

Since Memorial Day 2013, The Summit Project has collected biographical stories and tribute stones that uniquely represent our fallen, and we have invited members of our community to carry them on tribute treks across Maine and all over the world. In just nine years, the lives of Maine heroes have been honored on Katahdin, Kilimanjaro, Everest, Iceland, Cadillac, Denali and have been carried through parades, marathons and marches across Maine and the USA.

Thousands of participants have come together to honor our heroes through action. In short, The Summit Project is a proven living memorial and helps us fulfill our duty as Maine citizens.

Run completely by volunteers, every fundraising dollar returns in full to directly improve the program. After nine strong years and a lot of hard work, TSP is setting the standard for honoring and remembering our heroes from Maine.

Our goal for this year is $10,000. Reaching this goal would: Allow more Gold Star families to attend each of our hosted events; broaden the outreach to our target audience; help improve the Honor Room at Portland MEPS where our heroes’ stones are displayed; maintain the Honor Case and other critical assets of the organization; provide for the ongoing operational needs of our program; contribute toward the purchase of a new trailer to assist with transporting our stones and stories across all 16 counties of Maine.

VIRTUAL WRITE ON! WRITING GROUP

Want support for your craft? The Write On! writer’s group has been meeting at the Jesup since 2014, and remotely during the pandemic. Each meeting, members may bring in up to 1200 words to read for feedback, and in turn offer feedback to others. Although each member doesn’t get to read work every time, the group shares the time fairly. The group meets on Zoom, and hold in confidence what is shared. This group welcomes adults 18 and up writing in many genres. There’s no homework–the only commitment is two hours on Saturday mornings.

Author Talk: Mac Smith

In an era when the only means of travel to the new, glamorous, and growing resort of Bar Harbor was through a small, isolated, rural-yet-elegant point of land on the mainland in the small town of Hancock, Disaster at the Bar Harbor Ferry tells the true story of what was, at the time, Maine’s deadliest disaster.

The heartbreaking tale starts with the arrival of a train overcrowded with passengers anxious to be among the first to cross the bay and their rush for a ferry with too few seats, turning a casual summer Sunday outing into a scene of chaos, tragedy, death and heroism, occurring as quickly as the break of a wooden gangplank. Disaster at the Bar Harbor Ferry tells not only the complete story of the people and the events of that day, but of a time and way of life long gone by and nearly forgotten.

Annaliese Jakimides Teaches Workshop at Wendell Gilley Museum

Award-winning writer and mixed media artist, Annaliese Jakimides, will teach a writing workshop at the Wendell Gilley Museum on Saturday, Nov. 12, from 9 a.m. to noon at the museum. She will use pieces from the Gilley’s permanent collection and visiting exhibits to spark inspiration and creativity for students, a technique called “ekphrastic writing.”

“Ekphrastic writing can be analytical, deep and playful—but more than anything,” says Jakimides, “it provides an endless stream of possible entries into writing. love the way ekphrastic writing opens doors I didn’t see.” Students will write a few short pieces, have opportunities to read their work, and leave with “handouts, ideas, rough starts, and, likely, new work.”

Winner of the Acadia Prize in Poetry, Annaleise Jakimides has been nominated for the Pushcart Prize, and named a finalist for the Maine Literary Awards in both Poetry and Nonfiction. She raised a family in northern Maine, growing almost all their food and pumping water by hand. In addition to working with urban environmental justice organizations and international arts groups, she has developed humanities programs for schools and discussed life through the lens of children’s literature in a variety of settings, including prisons, community centers, and libraries. Cited in national competitions, her poetry and prose have been included in many journals and anthologies, and broadcast on Maine Public and National Public Radio.
