Community Narcan Training

We have all known for many years now that the opioid epidemic has been in full swing. One death from an overdose is too many, and we would like to offer an opportunity for you to maybe help prevent the next one.

Naloxone is a medication that rapidly reverses the effects of an opioid overdose. It is not harmful to someone who is not experiencing an overdose but can be a lifesaving tool that is very easy to use. We would love to see as many folks locally trained as possible. Additionally, if you are the owner or manager of a business that serves alcohol, we urge you to have trained staff.

We know that schedules are very busy to be asking folks to attend a training of this kind, but this is a very important issue. The training is not long, can be onsite, and the benefits could be lifesaving. There is no cost.

If you would like to have this training or have any questions, please contact John Lennon at 207-288-5533 or johnlennon@barharbormaine.gov.

This training is in cooperation with Healthy Acadia. A public community session is coming on Wednesday, October 5th at COA in Bar Harbor at 6:00 pm, more info to follow soon.

BECOME A BHFD FIREFIGHTER

Full-Time Employment

To check if Bar Harbor Fire Department is currently hiring, please go to the town’s jobs page.

Become A Call Member

Becoming a call force firefighter requires extensive training, hard work, and dedication to the community. We rely on call force firefighters to respond quickly to emergencies, to perform firefighting duties, and to provide assistance and support to career firefighters. To be a fall force firefighter is to have a chance to aid and serve the community, which is an extremely rewarding experience.

Author Talk: Morgan Talty “Night of the Living Rez” in Conversation with the Abbe Museum

Talty will be in conversation with Nolan Altvater, Curator of Education at the Abbe Museum, for this event.

Set in a Native community in Maine, Night of the Living Rez is a riveting debut collection about what it means to be Penobscot in the twenty-first century and what it means to live, to survive, and to persevere after tragedy.

In twelve striking, luminescent stories, author Morgan Talty―with searing humor, abiding compassion, and deep insight―breathes life into tales of family and a community as they struggle with a painful past and an uncertain future. A boy unearths a jar that holds an old curse, which sets into motion his family’s unraveling; a man, while trying to swindle some pot from a dealer, discovers a friend passed out in the woods, his hair frozen into the snow; a grandmother suffering from Alzheimer’s projects the past onto her grandson; and two friends, inspired by Antiques Roadshow, attempt to rob the tribal museum for valuable root clubs.

A collection that examines the consequences and merits of inheritance, Night of the Living Rez is an unforgettable portrayal of an Indigenous community and marks the arrival of a standout talent in contemporary fiction

Author Talk: Dan Burt “Every Wrong Direction: An Emigré’s Memoir”

“Every Wrong Direction” recreates and dissects the bitter education of Dan Burt, an American émigré who never found a home in America. It begins in the row homes of Jewish immigrants and working-class Italians on the mean streets of 1950s South Philadelphia. “Every Wrong Direction” follows the author from the rough, working-class childhood that groomed him to be a butcher or charter boat captain, through America, Britain and Saudi Arabia as student, lawyer, spy, culture warrior, and expatriate, ending with a photo of his college rooms at St John’s College, Cambridge. Between this beginning and end, through a Philadelphia commuter college, to Cambridge, then Yale Law School, across the working to upper classes, three countries, and seven cities over 43 years, it maps his pursuit of, realization, disillusionment with and abandonment of America and the American Dream.

Burt is a prolific author whose work has appeared in The Financial Times, The Sunday Times, and The New Statesman, among numerous other publications, newspapers, periodicals, and anthologies. He is also the author of four books of poetry and prose and a brief childhood memoir, “You Think It Strange.”

Star Party with Author & Illustrator Jamie Hogan

“Where are the stars, Mom?” Tamen asks in Jamie Hogan’s picture book Skywatcher. The bright lights in the city where he lives hide the stars, but a roadtrip into the woods reveals beautiful dark skies, the Milky Way, and nocturnal animals!

Join us at the Jesup Library on Saturday, September 24, from 10:30am–12:30pm for a Skywatcher story time and art workshop with Maine author & illustrator Jamie Hogan! Together we will explore constellations and what makes the dark skies over Mt. Desert Island so special. Each participant will receive a free signed copy of Jamie’s book Skywatcher.

This program is recommended for children ages 6–11; the Star Party is free of charge but registration is required due to limited space. This is a partner program with the Jesup Memorial Library.
