MOUNT DESERT—Justice Harold Stewart sentenced Glenn P. Stanley, 59, to fifteen years in prison after Stanley pleaded guilty to arson, attempted arson, and criminal mischief, according to a report by the Ellsworth American’s Jennifer Osborn. All but five of those years were suspended.

The April 22, 2024 fire destroyed one Stanley Mountain Road home and damaged another.

via Hancock County Jail

The initial dispatch, shortly after 2 p.m., had said that a woman saw through a home security camera that there was a man on the front porch of her residence at 18 Stanley Mountain Road. Stanley allegedly had a gas tank and a lighter. According to the scanner, she could see the flame of the lighter, but the flame did not catch. Stanley also blew kisses at the camera during the event. This was not the same residence that burned extensively.

Stanley also now has four years of probation and according to the American must pay $7,200 in restitution to the victims. A condition of his probation is to have no contact with the people who were renting one property nor the property owners.

Stanley Mountain Road is off Route 198/Sound Drive in Mount Desert.

Firefighters contained the blaze after approximately 2.5 hours, investigators stayed on scene until evening.

Osborn quoted Hancock County District Attorney Bob Granger wanting an eighteen-year-sentence and as saying to Stewart, “Eighteen years is just above the halfway point for a 30-year-sentence on a Class A crime….”

The property, Granger said was valued at $240,000. It did not have replacement value insurance.

“There was tremendous financial loss, emotional loss—again most concerning is Mr. Stanley took a rifle to the scene,” Osborn quoted Granger as saying.
