ROQUE BLUFFS—The Maine State Police Dive Team and Maine Marine Patrol have found the bodies of 61-year-old Sharon Bukulmez, of Mount Desert, and her grandchildren, 5-year-old granddaughter, Kinsley Grubb and 3-year-old grandson, Sawyer Grubb, of Bar Harbor, in a submerged car in Pond Cove in Roque Bluffs this morning.
The state police are investigating the deaths.
“The three were traveling to Machias but did not arrive as expected. After concerns were raised about their whereabouts, law enforcement began attempting to locate Bukulmez and the children,” the release states. The travels were on Saturday.
The Bar Harbor Police Department was able to use Bukulmez’s cellphone to locate her cellphone in the water close to a boat ramp at Schoppee Point Road in Roque Bluffs.
Maine State Police were notified and troopers along with Maine State Police dive team members and Maine Marine Patrol members responded.
The vehicle was found submerged in Pond Cove at approximately 7 a.m. on Sunday, September 20.
Bukelmez and her grandchildren were inside the vehicle. All were taken from the water.
“The Washington County Sheriff’s Office and the Coast Guard also assisted on scene. The bodies were transported to the Office of Chief Medical Examiner in Augusta, where autopsies will be performed to determine the cause and manner of death. The circumstances surrounding the incident remain under investigation. No additional information is being released at this time,” according to Maine State Police Public Information Officer Shannon Moss.
The site of the deaths is at the same location where two women died in July 2013 after driving their Dodge Caravan off Shoppee Point Road and into the water during a foggy night. Amy Stiner, 37, of Machias, and Melissa Moyer, 38, of Sunbury, Pa. Stiner was pregnant at the time.
In 2005, another man, Ricky Alexander of Rhode Island, had driven his car off the road at the same location. He and his friends survived.
