TRENTON—A duo of calls—including a dumpster fire—in Trenton Wednesday night kept the volunteer firefighters busy.

The first fire was at The Hinckley Company on the Ramp Road, which is located behind the Hancock County Airport. The call was toned out as a possible structure fire.

“The initial report indicated that cleaning staff detected the odor of smoke coming from a fabrication building on the right side of the property. Upon arrival, Trenton crews found moderate smoke conditions inside the structure,” the department wrote in a press release.

When firefighters arrived, they located a vacuum pump in a mechanical space that was malfunctioning and eliminated the hazard.

“Due to the report of smoke in a commercial occupancy, Trenton’s automatic aid partners were dispatched as a precaution. Once the situation was brought under control and Trenton crews began ventilating the building, the automatic aid response was canceled,” the department said.

Hinckley maintenance personnel responded as well and shown the equipment that was damaged. There were no injuries.

Trenton units cleared the scene at approximately 7:17 p.m., the department stated, but at 11:18 p.m., the firefighters were called out again. This time it was for a dumpster fire that was located at 1147 Bar Harbor Road.

When firefighters arrived, they found a dumpster with contents that were on fire. Though the dumpster was located near the Open Hearth Motel, no other structures, other than the Open Hearth Motel sign, were threatened.

“Crews were able to quickly bring the fire under control, extinguish the blaze, and complete overhaul of the debris. The contents of the dumpster appeared to include construction debris and furniture,” the department said.

The firefighters were able to leave shortly after midnight.

“The Trenton Fire Department extends its appreciation to our automatic aid partners from Lamoine, Hancock, and Ellsworth for their prompt response and continued support,” the department thanked the departments involved in the Hinckley response.

No injuries were reported in either call.
