Maine State Police is Investigating Two Deaths in Tremont

TREMONT—The Maine State Police is investigating two deaths in Tremont, December 23.

“On Tuesday, December 23, 2025, at approximately 8:57 a.m., Southwest Harbor Police responded to a 911 call about an incident near Big Rocks Road, Tremont,” Maine State Police Public Information Officer Shannon Moss said, Tuesday afternoon.

The person calling 911 reported that there were two dead people at the scene. Those names have not been released.

”Members of the Maine State Police Major Crimes Unit North responded and are investigating the circumstances surrounding the deaths with coordination with Southwest Harbor Police,” Moss said. “The deceased will be transported to the Office of Chief Medical Examiner in Augusta where autopsies will be performed to determine the cause and manner of death. Members of the Maine State Police Evidence Response Team were dispatched to the scene and will work to process available evidence.”

The police believe the deaths are isolated and there are no ongoing public safety concerns.

Big Rocks Road is a small road off the Leighton Road, which is another small road in Bass Harbor. There are only a few homes on the road.

Earlier in the day, Maine State Police confirmed that it was investigating an incident, but wasn’t releasing details at that time.

At approximately 2:42 p.m. Southwest Harbor Police Chief John Hall posted on the Southwest Harbor Police Department’s Facebook page, “Regarding the incident in Tremont, we are assisting the Maine State Police with an investigation. There is no danger to the public. MSP will be releasing a statement shortly and we will post it here. Thank you for your patience and concern.”
