BAR HARBOR—On Saturday, November 15, the Bar Harbor and Mount Desert Police Department held a “fill a cruiser” food drive event at the Bar Harbor Hannaford. The event, held in collaboration with Hannaford, was organized by the department’s Mental Health Liaison Melissa Gleason.

Fill a cruiser they did! Gleason and Officer Kevin Edgecomb were at Hannaford for six hours, from 9 a.m., until 3 p.m., and filled one of the department’s pickups, twice. In addition, Hannaford was able to collect over $1,000 in cash donations.

The food and the money were given to the food pantry that afternoon.

“This food drive was a great example of how a community can come together. We appreciate the police department, Hannaford, and everyone who stopped by to offer support. Officer Edgecomb and Melissa Gleason spent their Saturday collecting resources that the Bar Harbor Food Pantry can distribute during a critical time for our patrons. It was truly heartwarming to see and connect with so many generous people,” said Bar Harbor Food Pantry Board of Directors Chair Jena Young.

Young continued, “This has been a big year for BHFP. We moved to a new and more efficient building while also seeing the highest patron visitation in the organization’s history. The pantry staff and volunteers show up every day with dedication. None of our work is possible without them.”

If you would like to help the food pantry or help at the food pantry, Young said that “there are three clear ways to give and get involved at BHFP: volunteer time, donate money, and donate food. This drive is a great example of how all three of those came together to change lives and feed our neighbors.”
