BAR HARBOR—On Thursday, October 23, at approximately 10:45 p.m., Officer Nathan Formby attempted to initiate a traffic stop on a black 2015 Audi at the intersection of Eden Street and Cottage Street in Bar Harbor. The Audi did not stop.
While Officer Kevin Edgecomb of the Bar Harbor Mount Desert Police Department said that there was no mention of speeds yet recorded in the police report, the Audi did take off and it took Formby some time to “safely catch up” to the vehicle.
The driver of the Audi, Drew Smith, 25, of Marshallville, Ohio, pulled over at Stone Haven Drive, which is off Eagle Lake Road.
Officer Formby arrested Smith and charged him with eluding an officer and driving to endanger. Smith was transported to the Hancock County Jail. According to Officer Edgecomb, there was no apparent reason for Smith to try and elude Officer Formby.
BAR HARBOR AND MOUNT DESERT POLICE LOGS
The following incidents occurred in Bar Harbor and Mount Desert last week according to the Bar Harbor and Mount Desert Police Department police logs, which is publicly released information.

Someone in Mount Desert reported to Officer Liam Harrington that they had accidentally broken a vehicle window when a rock was thrown by lawn equipment while weed whacking.
Bar Harbor Mental Health Liaison Melissa Gleason assisted someone in Bar Harbor with transportation issues.
Someone reported being threatened at a Bar Harbor business and as a result of investigation, J’amie Ward, 53, of Bar Harbor, was summoned by Sgt. Doug Brundrett for criminal threatening.
Sgt. Jerrod Hardy spoke with a man in Bar Harbor about the conditions of a protection from abuse order.
After receiving a complaint regarding a parent yelling at a child in Mount Desert, Officer Harrington determined that nothing suspicious in nature was occurring.
Officer Ted Cake fingerprinted someone at the Bar Harbor Police Department.

Officer Amie Torrey assisted the Mount Desert Fire Department with a medical call in Mount Desert.
After receiving a report of a tenant dispute in Mount Desert, Officer Caleb Mora deemed that it was a civil issue.
Pauline Dunbar, 64, of Southwest Harbor, was driving a 2013 Chrysler Town and Country van on Eagle Lake Road in Bar Harbor when she stopped abruptly for a flock of turkeys that was crossing the road. Finley O’Connor, 24, of Harwinton, Connecticut, was driving a 2005 Subaru Outback behind Dunbar and was unable to stop in time and struck the rear of Dunbar’s vehicle. O’Connor was checked by medical personnel on scene but refused transport. O’Connor’s vehicle required towing from the scene.
Officer Mora arrested Daren Cross, 47, no hometown listed, on an active arrest warrant for failure to appear in Northeast Harbor.
Someone turned over ammunition for disposal at the Bar Harbor Police Department.
Sgt. Chris Dickens conducted a bias-based criminal investigation based upon an incident that had occurred earlier in the week in Bar Harbor and referred the matter to the State of Maine Attorney General’s Office.
Officer Mora worked an outside detail for a sporting event in Bar Harbor.
Sgt. Dickens responded to a motor vehicle complaint for erratic operation by a vehicle that was heading towards the island. After failing to locate the suspect vehicle, the complaint was passed on to the Southwest Harbor Police Department.

Officer Formby issued six warnings for the municipal violation of overnight camping in Bar Harbor.
Officer Formby documented some information after speaking on the phone with a person in Bar Harbor.
Following a traffic complaint in Bar Harbor, Officer Formby located the suspect vehicle, stopped the vehicle, and issued the driver a citation for a traffic violation.
A 16-year-old from Lamoine was driving a 2017 Chevy Suburban south on Route 102 in Bar Harbor when the vehicle left the roadway to the right, went into a ditch, struck a driveway embankment which caused the vehicle to become airborne, and then came to rest after hitting a tree head-on. The driver was checked and cleared by medical personnel at the scene and the vehicle was towed from the scene due to disabling front-end damage.
Following a traffic complaint in Bar Harbor regarding a vehicle being driven aggressively and making bad passes, Officer Judson Cake located the suspect vehicle, stopped it, and issued the driver a citation for a speeding and warned the driver for his aggressive driving.

Officer Formby issued four warnings for the municipal violation of overnight camping in Bar Harbor.
Officer Justin Burnett received a complaint regarding an abandoned vehicle in Bar Harbor.
Officer Burnett documented a report at the complainant’s request regarding a vehicle’s rear window being broken while parked in Bar Harbor.
Officer T. Cake performed a requested well-being check on someone in Mount Desert and found them to be okay.
The Bar Harbor Police Department received a motor vehicle complaint regarding a vehicle that was on the Schooner Head Road in Acadia National Park and the complaint was passed on to the park service.
Officer Burnett took a report of a vehicle alarm going off in Bar Harbor and found nothing suspicious.
After receiving a theft complaint in Bar Harbor, Officer Kaleb Payson was able to determine that the item was actually misplaced by the owner.

Officer Burnett disposed of some debris that was found in the Village Green in Bar Harbor.
A Bar Harbor business requested that Sgt. Hardy issue someone who was acting suspiciously in the store earlier in the day a no-trespass warning for the property. The business did not know who the person was, so it was advised to call the police again if the person returned.
Following a traffic complaint in Bar Harbor, Officer Harrington arrested Pandie D. E. Anderson, 66, of Bend, Oregon, for operating under the influence. Anderson was transported to the Hancock County Jail.
Officer Harrington provided an intoxicated pedestrian in Bar Harbor a ride home.

Following a traffic stop in Bar Harbor, Hanna Wells, 43, of Bass Harbor, was arrested by Officer Payson for operating under the influence. Wells was transported to the Hancock County Jail.
Officer Payson spoke with a Mount Desert resident.
Sgt. Brundrett received a parking complaint in the area of Cottage Street and Greeley Avenue in Bar Harbor and issued the offending vehicle a parking citation.
A motor vehicle complaint in Bar Harbor resulted in all officers being out of position to intercept the suspect vehicle.
Sgt. Brundrett responded to a report of a vehicle alarm that had been going off for ten minutes on Albert Meadow in Bar Harbor and found that the alarm had been silenced when he arrived.
Officer Payson took a report of a civil issue in Bar Harbor.
Officer Zack Kline arrested Brian McNeil, 53, of Eddington, Maine, in Bar Harbor, for violation of conditions of release, unlawful possession of a schedule W drug and unlawful possession of a schedule Z drug. McNeil was transported to the Hancock County Jail.

After receiving a motor vehicle complaint on Route 3 in Bar Harbor, Sgt. Brundrett located the suspect vehicle, stopped it, and issued the driver a warning for their driving behavior.
BHMHL Gleason assisted a Bar Harbor community member with housing barriers.
A Bar Harbor resident called the police department and spoke with Officer Harrington about an ongoing dispute with their spouse.
Officer Torrey responded to a report of someone that was in a Mount Desert store who was not supposed to be in the store, but the person was gone when she arrived.
Officer J. Cake performed requested overnight security checks at a Mount Desert business.
After responding to a report of a vehicle in a ditch in Bar Harbor, Officer J. Cake arrested Jonathan Grier, 36, of Deltona, Florida, for operating under the influence.

Officer J. Cake stopped a vehicle for going the wrong way on a one-way street in Bar Harbor and arrested the driver, Nicole Neal, 32, of Longmont, Colorado, for operating under the influence.

Officer Bradley Russell is investigating a report of a missing boat engine in Southwest Harbor.
Officer Russell responded to Tremont after receiving a 911 call. After making contact with the caller, Officer Russell got them medical attention.
Tuesday, October 21, 2025
After receiving a report of a possibly abandoned car on the Seawall Road in Southwest Harbor, Officer Rick Graham responded and found that it was partially in the travel lane. After unsuccessful attempts to reach the owner, the vehicle was towed.
Officer Kristen Roulet retrieved a reported loose dog from the Seawall Road area in Southwest Harbor and took it back to the police station.

Officer Graham gave a Southwest Harbor resident a ride home from MDI Hospital because no taxis were available due to the late hour.
Officer Russell spoke with a Southwest Harbor resident regarding an ongoing civil issue.
Sgt. Ryan Blakeney received a motor vehicle complaint from another agency regarding a vehicle heading toward Southwest Harbor but was out of position to intercept the vehicle at the time.

After receiving a report of a porcupine that was near the roadway in Southwest Harbor, Officer Russell responded but was unable to locate the porcupine.
After receiving a report of a dog that was in the roadway in Southwest Harbor, Officer Russell responded but was unable to locate the dog.
Officer Russell performed a directed patrol for speeders in the Seal Cove area.
Someone walked into the Southwest Harbor Police Department to report an incident that occurred near his home in Bass Harbor to Officer Roulet.
Officer Russell spoke with someone who was looking for information on a case that did not involve the Southwest Harbor Police Department. Officer Russell referred the person to the correct agency.

Officer James Kamorski responded to a motor vehicle complaint in Southwest Harbor but was not able to locate the vehicle in question.
After receiving a request to perform a well-being check in Southwest Harbor, Officer Kamorski did so and “resolved the issue.”
After receiving a complaint of a dog-at-large, Officer Kamorski was able to return the dog to its owner.
Officer James Kamorski responded to a motor vehicle complaint in Southwest Harbor but was not able to locate the vehicle in question.
Officer Kamorski responded to a complaint regarding two dogs at large in Southwest Harbor and spoke to the dog owners about the situation, resolving the issue.
Officer Kamorski received information about something from someone in Tremont.

Officer Graham responded with the ambulance service to a medical call at a Southwest Harbor business and provided a lift assist.
Officer Grahan is investigating a theft reported by a Southwest Harbor resident.
Officer Graham responded with the ambulance service to a medical call in Tremont and provided a lift assist.
Officer Graham responded with the ambulance service to a medical emergency alarm in Tremont but upon arrival it was determined that the patient was in Florida and the alarm company had not updated its patient account.
After receiving a report of an activated panic alarm at a Southwest Harbor residence, Officer Graham was called off prior to his arrival.
Someone reported some loud and possibly intoxicated people on Main Street in Southwest Harbor by the Pemetic School. Officer Graham determined that it was just three juveniles waiting to get picked up by a parent.
A Southwest Harbor resident reported that they were being harassed, but Officer Graham determined that the complaint was unfounded.

After receiving a 911 call and Officer Graham responding, a Southwest Harbor resident was voluntarily transferred to a hospital for an evaluation.
Officer Kamorski performed a requested well-being check on a Southwest Harbor resident and ended up transporting the resident to MDI Hospital for an evaluation.
Officer Kamorski received a request to perform a well-being check on someone in Tremont but could not locate anyone in the area that the person was supposed to be in.
CAR/DEER CRASHES
Due to time constraints, we do not write about car/deer crashes or minor vehicle crashes such as parking lot or parked vehicle/moving vehicle collisions. We do realize that many readers are interested in car/deer collisions so we will be listing them by town and roadway here, starting this week.
BAR HARBOR — None reported, but according to scanner traffic there was one on Route 3 on October 25. That accident is not yet in the press releases.
MOUNT DESERT — None reported.

These are the Maine State Police press releases from the last few days. The Bar Harbor Story will include these each week though most (and sometimes all) do not occur on Mount Desert Island.
Fire Marshal’s Office Investigating Fatal Fire in Benton

BENTON—On Wednesday, October 22, 2025, at approximately 2:07 a.m., the Office of State Fire Marshal responded to 70 Pleasant Drive in Benton at the request of the Fairfield-Benton Fire Rescue following a report of a residential fire. Upon arrival, firefighters found a single-family residence that was fully involved.
Mutual aid was provided by the Waterville, Albion, Clinton, Skowhegan, and Oakland Fire Departments. Suppression efforts brought the fire under control, though Pleasant Street was temporarily closed to allow for emergency operations.
During firefighting operations, crews located a deceased individual inside the residence. The deceased was transported to the Office of Chief Medical Examiner in Augusta to determine the cause of death and for positive identification. One dog was also located deceased inside the home.
The victim has been identified by the Office of Chief Medical Examiner as 62-year-old Paul Verville. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
Arrest Made in Livermore Falls Exploitation Case; State Police Seek Public’s Help Identifying Additional Individuals
LIVERMORE FALLS—Detectives with the Maine State Police Major Crimes Unit South arrested 40-year-old Jacob Hiscock, of Livermore Falls, early morning, Wednesday, October 22, 2025, at his residence in Livermore Falls on charges of sexual abuse of a minor and possession of sexually explicit material.
The charges stem from a month-long investigation involving the Maine State Police Computer Crimes Unit, Sabattus Police Department, Oxford County Sheriff’s Office, and the Maine Warden’s Service. Hiscock was transported to the Androscoggin County Jail.

Maine State Police Arrests South Portland Man: Two Stolen Handguns Recovered

PORTLAND—On Friday, October 17, 2025, at approximately 9:00 p.m., a trooper with Troop I initiated a traffic stop on Skyway Drive in Portland for a defective taillight. The driver and registered owner of the vehicle was identified as 29-year-old Abdullahi Ahmed Mohamud, of South Portland.
During the course of the investigation, troopers determined that Mohamud was currently on bail conditions prohibiting him from using or possessing dangerous weapons and restricting him from being out between the hours of 8:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m.
A search of the vehicle resulted in the discovery of two stolen handguns. Mohamud was placed under arrest and charged with violation of conditions of release and receiving stolen property. He was transported to the Cumberland County Jail. This is an ongoing investigation. No additional information is available at this time.
Maine Drug Enforcement Agency Makes Three Drug Related Arrests in New Gloucester and Lewiston
NEW GLOUCESTER and LEWISTON—On Wednesday, October 22, 2025, at approximately 7:00 a.m., following a month-long investigation, Maine Drug Enforcement Agency Agents with assistance from the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office Emergency Services Unit (ESU) and the South Portland Police Department’s Southern Maine Regional SWAT Team (SMSWAT) executed a search warrant at 1351 Lewiston Road in New Gloucester.
Agents arrested and charged 45-year-old Siyad Abdi, of New Gloucester, with trafficking and unlawful possession. Abdi also had three outstanding warrants. Abdi was transported to the Cumberland County Jail. His bail was set at $15,000.
Later in the day, at approximately 4:00 p.m., at 88 Bartlett Street in Lewiston, 41-year-old Abdurahim Ibrahim, of New Gloucester, was arrested on an outstanding warrant stemming from this month-long investigation. He was charged with three counts of unlawful trafficking, one count of felony possession, and violation of conditions of release. Ibrahim was transported to the Androscoggin County Jail and is being held without bail.
Also arrested at this Lewiston location was 37-year-old Kayla Labonte, of New Gloucester. She was arrested for trafficking and unlawful possession. Bail for Labonte was set at $10,000. This investigation remains ongoing. No additional information is being released at this time.
Maine State Police Investigating Shooting in Waldo County
KNOX—On Thursday, October 23, 2025, at approximately 4:25 p.m., troopers from the Central Field Troop responded to 1580 Bailey Road in Knox for a report of a shooting. Troopers arrived on scene and determined the victim, 40-year-old Astin Elwell, of Knox, had been shot and was driven to Waldo General Hospital in Belfast prior to troopers arriving.
Elwell was later transported to Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor with non-life-threatening injuries. A preliminary investigation indicates three males arrived at the residence in a gold/tan Jeep Cherokee. The males were wearing ski masks, and one of the males shot Elwell as she answered the door. The suspects then fled the scene.
Troopers were able to locate a vehicle of interest behind a nearby residence which was seized for evidence processing. The three males have not been located at this time. There is no known risk to the public. This is believed to be an isolated incident.
The Maine State Police Evidence Response Team continued working through the evening to collect evidence. Assisting State Police were the Maine Drug Enforcement Agency, the Waldo County Sheriff’s Office, and local EMS/Fire departments. Maine State Police Investigating Multi-Vehicle Crash Involving Stolen Vehicle
AUGUSTA—On Friday, October 24, 2025, at approximately 4:05 p.m., a Major Crimes Central Detective was traveling northbound on I-95 in Augusta when the detective observed a 2008 Toyota Tundra driving erratically and attempted to initiate a traffic stop.
The Tundra failed to stop despite the detective activating the cruiser’s blue lights and siren. In the area of mile 119 northbound, the Tundra struck another vehicle, resulting in a crash involving four total vehicles, including the Tundra.
The driver of the Tundra fled on foot but was apprehended shortly after by Troop I Troopers who responded to the scene. A passenger of a 2024 Toyota RAV4 and the driver of a 2013 Buick Enclave were transported to Maine General Hospital in Augusta with non-life-threatening injuries.
While on scene, it was learned that the Tundra had recently been stolen in Augusta. As a result, 34-year-old Karl McDougal-Orosco, of Pittsfield, was transported to the Kennebec County Jail in Augusta. He faces charges of eluding an officer, driving to endanger, reckless conduct with a dangerous weapon, and unauthorized use of a motor vehicle.
There were significant traffic delays as a result of the crash; however, no secondary crashes occurred. Sidney Fire & Rescue, Delta Ambulance, and Ready Road Towing assisted on scene.
Fire Marshal’s Office Investigating Fires in Turner

TURNER—On Saturday, October 25, 2025, at approximately 5:00 p.m., the Turner Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire at a single-family residence in Turner. Upon arrival, firefighters found two small sheds fully involved in fire (not the single-family residence). The sheds were located immediately adjacent to one another, with no involvement or damage to any residential structures. Both sheds were a total loss. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Fire Marshal’s Office Investigates Structure Fire at Troll Valley Campground in Farmington

FARMINGTON—On Sunday, October 26, 2025, at approximately 2:00 p.m., the Farmington Fire Department responded to a reported structure fire at 283 Red Schoolhouse Road in Farmington, the location of the Troll Valley Campground.
Upon arrival, firefighters encountered a working structure fire and quickly brought the fire under control with assistance from area mutual aid departments. The Farmington Fire Department requested the Fire Marshal’s Office to assist with the investigation.
After examination, FMO Investigators determined that the fire originated in a confined space in the ceiling between the basement and first floor of the building. The cause of the fire has been ruled accidental. No injuries were reported. One cat perished in the fire. The building sustained significant damage.
