SOUTHWEST HARBOR—On Thursday, October 16, 2025, former Pemetic School Principal Christine Gray’s email received a threatening email. According to School Superintendent Micheal Zboray, the email said that explosives had been planted in each of the schools that received the email, which was approximately 50 schools in Maine and Texas.
The email was received after normal school hours and was forwarded to Zboray at approximately 7:30 p.m.
The email was fairly quickly deemed a hoax by local law enforcement and the Maine Information Analysis Center (MIAC) due to reasons outlined in Zboray’s letter (below) to the school community that he sent that same evening, October 16.
“Dear Southwest Harbor Community,
“Earlier this evening, I was notified that a threatening email had been received by approximately 50 schools throughout Maine and Texas. The email indicated that explosives had been planted in each of the schools on the distribution list – which was outdated and had many wrong addresses on it. I am sorry to report that Pemetic Elementary School was on that list.
“I immediately notified local law enforcement, and shared the email with them. The message was also shared with the Maine Information Analysis Center (MIAC)—a program of the Maine Department of Public Safety whose mission is to collect, analyze and appropriately share intelligence between the federal government and the State of Maine.
“After review, law enforcement agencies throughout the state have determined that the email is a replica of others that have been distributed in the past, and there is no credible threat to the Pemetic Elementary School or any other Maine school at this time. With this reassurance from law enforcement, we will hold school as per the normal schedule on Friday, October 17.
“As always, student and staff safety is our primary concern. We understand that incidents such as this can be unsettling for many, and we encourage you to support one another and to reach out to our school leaders—myself included—if you have concerns about anything that you see or hear. I will be at school tomorrow morning.”
FIRE DESTROYS TOWN HLL BUILDING

TOWN HILL—On Friday, October 17, the Bar Harbor Fire Department received a report of a structure fire on the Kitteridge Brook Road in Town Hill.
The property owner had fallen asleep and was awakened by a smoke detector and tried to use a fire extinguisher to put out the fire before it exploded skyward during the evening fire. He said the fire had been started by a candle. Elver nets, fishing gear, and a sand shed were also destroyed in the fire that was knocked down at approximately 10 p.m.
“It was hard for us to determine the exact cause,” Bar Harbor Fire Chief Matt Bartlett said of the fire and what the candle initially ignited.
“Candles need to be extinguished and watched and monitored,” Chief Bartlett said. “You really need to be vigilant with them.”
Candle fires cause approximately 7,610 home structure fires each year, causing approximately 81 deaths and 677 injuries. Approximately 21 fires caused by candles happen every day in the United States.
Chief Bartlett advised not leaving candles unattended, to stay in the same room as they are when lit, and not to fall asleep while they are still lit.
He also thanked the Mount Desert Island emergency services who assisted, which included Mount Desert Fire Department, Trenton Volunteer Fire Department, Tremont Fire Department, Southwest Harbor Fire Department and the Southwest Harbor-Tremont Ambulance Service. Some departments assisted directly at the fire while others provided island coverage for other emergencies.
