This gripping documentary directed by Joe Wein and executive produced by filmmaker Ang Lee, chronicles Hancock County resident Steven Callahan’s extraordinary survival story when his sailboat, the Napoleon Solo, was severely damaged during a violent storm in the Atlantic in February 1982, an event he attributes to a collision with a whale. Callahan was forced to take to his life raft with only a basic emergency kit, and for the next 76 days, he drifted across the vast expanse of the Atlantic Ocean, a tiny speck against the immensity of the sea. The film depicts his immense struggle for survival against hunger, thirst, and the raw power of nature, but also highlights his remarkable resourcefulness in catching fish, patching his raft, and navigating with primitive tools.
