Note: “People We’ve Lost” is a feature of the Bar Harbor Story where we share obituaries of people that the island lost in the previous 1-2 weeks.

We’re doing this because we think everyone deserves to be remembered as widely as possible and not behind paywalls or at a cost of $500 for people mourning. We’re free.

If you have an obituary for a loved one or friend that you can’t afford to place in other spaces, please let us know, and we’ll share it here for you.

Ann (DesJardin) Murphy

Southwest Harbor

Ann Marie Murphy passed away peacefully at the age of 81 on Sept. 21, 2025, at Westgate Center in Bangor. She was born March 14, 1944, in Augusta, Maine, the daughter of Eunice (Billings) and Alphie Joseph DesJardin, and the stepdaughter of Samuel G. Dam.

Ann was a devoted wife and mother and dedicated her life to her family. Alongside her late husband, Philip “Pete,” she proudly owned and operated White Birches Campground in Southwest Harbor from approximately 1984 to 1999, where they built a welcoming community and made lifelong friendships, including Kathy and Andy Chatlass, who returned to visit every year.

Ann had a spirited love for NASCAR and a keen eye for hidden treasures, often found during her weekend yard sale adventures and shopping trips. She was known for her deep affection for her cats, offering care and comfort to both strays and her own. Over the years, her home was filled with the quiet comfort of purrs and the playful mischief of paws. Her greatest joy, however, came from the simple pleasures of life — cradling babies in her arms and spending time with her beloved grandchildren and her many great-grandchildren, whose laughter and presence lit up her world.

Though Ann was reserved and quiet by nature, she always enjoyed connecting with others and valued meaningful conversations. She especially looked forward to hosting her annual family Christmas party and planning camping trips with her cousins from Massachusetts — Ruthann, Teddy, and Anthony.

Ann is survived by her three children, John Murphy and wife, Bonnie, of Southwest Harbor, Carol Gilley and husband, David, of Hancock, and Adam Murphy and wife, Eliza, of Hancock; grandchildren Erica Conners and husband, Josh, of Ellsworth, and Patrick Murphy and wife, Carly, of Bar Harbor; great-grandchildren James, Alanna, Kendall, Nolan, Remi, Crew, Naomi, Silas and Saoirse.

She is also survived by three brothers and their wives, John DesJardin and wife, Jean, of Eastbrook, Timothy DesJardin and wife, Vicki, of Franklin, and David DesJardin and wife, Nancy, of Winterport; and many nieces and nephews.

Ann was predeceased by her beloved husband, mother, father, and stepfather.

Memorial service will be held Oct. 24 at United Baptist Church, Ellsworth, 5:30 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Westgate Center for Rehab & Alzheimer’s Care, 750 Union St, Bangor, ME 04401.
