BAR HARBOR—The day before the first day of school something special happens at Conners Emerson in Bar Harbor.
The teachers and staff are celebrated and welcomed to their home away from home by many of the community members—and students—who love them.
The sixth annual welcome back event at Conners Emerson, Wednesday morning was no different as cheers, shouts, applause, a little dancing, and a whole lot of joy welcomed teachers and staff as they returned to the buildings after a summer off.
This will likely be the last year that this happens right in front of the Conners building because of construction of a new school, which will likely be concluded later this year. The students and staff will move into that new multi-million dollar project and the old Conners and Emerson buildings will be demolished.

“Have you ever witnessed the amazing farewell that our beloved CES teachers & staff give our students as they head home on the last day of school? All of the staff rush out of school and line the sidewalks as they wildly cheer on our children parting ways for the summer. It’s a testament to the sheer dedication and support that everyone at CES provides to our children each and every day,” a post on the Conners Emerson Parent Teacher Student Association’s social media read. “We like to show the same support and love for them – please join us in cheering on our teachers & staff as they start the new school year!”
According to the association, “We used to try to keep this a secret from CES staff, but we’re pretty sure after six years, they aren’t surprised anymore! Now it’s just a wonderful tradition and a great way to kick off the school year (and practice waking up early)!”
