SOUTHWEST HARBOR—The Southwest Harbor paving project that has caused traffic delays for parts of multiple years is mostly finished. The paving is done.

“They finished in the eleventh hour on Friday,” Town Manager Karen Reddersen said.

In June, the town’s select board had approved R.F. Jordan & Sons’ request to extend its time to finish the Main Street Road project.

The project is mostly complete after years of planning work and construction and some weather setbacks, ledge, and state communication delays.

“We want this project done. This project has been lingering on from well before me,” Reddersen had said in May. “We want this done and they are very, very close.”

The roadwork had been extended to include one-way alternating traffic through Friday, June 20, 2025.

Work on Main Street has been ongoing since 2022. Last year, R.F. Jordan & Sons replaced water lines, installed storm-water catch basins, sidewalks, and drainage systems. Before that trees were cleared and erosion systems installed.

“Do you know the timeline on painting?” Vice Chair Chapin McFarland asked, Tuesday. “It’s kind of dangerous not having any lines on there.”

Reddersen said, “We will have some soon.”

FIREWORKS

The completion is in time for the town’s Fourth of July fireworks celebration, which is sponsored by the Acadia Chamber through community donations. Fireworks will be shot from a barge in the middle of the harbor on July 4. The rain date is Sunday, July 6.

According to the chamber there is great viewing from SW Harbor and Manset.

HARBOR COMMITTEE

There were no proposed changes to the town’s Harbor Committee Ordinance, June 24, but the town’s select board did appoint one new member to that harbor committee: Christopher Clark.

There were four applications in the packet for the agenda, Reddersen said.

“Chris has been great. We’ve had some attendance from Ron Musetti; Ryan has had some attendance,” Harbor Committee Chair Nicholas Madeira said. “Everyone who has applied would be a great benefit to the committee.”

Madeira felt nine was a good number for the committee and 12 gets “out of hand” when it comes to discussion. Others on the committee agreed, he said.

Clark has attended all meetings since January, Town Clerk Jennifer LaHaye said, and also all the select board meetings.

“He is the only applicant who is here in person at this time,” LaHaye told select board members Tuesday night.

“I think this is commendable,” board member Carolyn Ball said of Clark’s persistence and attendance. “You’ve been attending these and we’ve said, ‘Come back. Come back. Come back.’”

Ball suggested expanding the committee’s membership to ten and having Clark be that tenth member. They could go back to nine next year if other’s terms ended and they didn’t choose to serve again.

McFarland agreed.

“Nine and ten are close enough,” McFarland said. “Chris seems like a very dedicated person to the community.”

Clark’s three-year term will be until 2028.

LICENSES

The board approved a liquor license renewal for Clark Point Catering, LLC as well as incorporated civic organization licenses for the Harbor House for the Lobsters on the Sound Fundraiser and the Polo and Yacht Club Fundraiser.
