Saving Sick and Injured Wild Animals with Acadia Wildlife Center’s Tony Mullane

SOUTHWEST HARBOR – Join us on Tuesday, September 3rd at 5:30 at the Southwest Harbor Public Library to hear from Acadia Wildlife Center’s new Executive Director Tony Mullane who will be presenting on the Center’s mission to heal sick and injured native wildlife. The son of wildlife rehabilitator Ann Rivers, Tony is now joining his mother in her pursuit to heal injured wildlife of Maine. He will be presenting on his unique childhood, from catching eagles, to feeding baby squirrels, to pushing a moose calf through the woods. Plus he will be talking about the Center’s work over the last 30 years, the importance of wildlife in Maine’s ecosystems, and showing a live education animal.

Acadia Wildlife Center, established in 1994, is dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation, and release of sick and injured native wildlife in Maine. Through education and community engagement, the Center promotes awareness of wildlife conservation and the importance of preserving natural habitats.

The Southwest Harbor Historical Society is located at the Manset Meetinghouse 192 Seawall Road, Southwest Harbor.

Dates they will be open are September 4, 11, 14, 18 and 26, all from 1-3 PM.

The historical society will also be having a program on boat builders of Southwest Harbor on Saturday, September 28 at 4 PM. Kathe Newman Walton will be the presenter.

“David Little: The Real and the Surreal”

Wednesday, September 4, 2024, at 5:30 p.m. in person

NORTHEAST HARBOR—On Wednesday, September4, at 5:30 pm, the Northeast Harbor Library will open the exhibition “David Little: The Real and Surreal” in the Mellon Room. The reception includes refreshments and brief remarks and a signing of Art of Penobscot Bay, the latest collaboration of David and his brother Carl.

“David Little: The Real and the Surreal” offers a cross-section of the Portland-based artist’s work. Along with his familiar plein-air landscape paintings and craypas drawings of Maine, including images of Katahdin, Corea, Great Cranberry Island, and Acadia, the show presents recent mixed-media explorations of abstract idioms in watercolor, ink, collage and photography. Some of the new work was featured earlier this year in “Eclectic Chord” at Cove Street Arts in Portland, and several photographs recently entered the University of New England’s Stephen Halpert collection. Little also mounted a large exhibition of his pandemic–related abstract work at the Merrill Memorial Library in Yarmouth, titled “Line & Color: An Artist Let Loose.”

“My first show before moving to Maine in 1988 was at the Northeast Harbor Library in May of 1985,” Little says. He is delighted to return after so many years to share his work. The show runs through the month of September and is, in scope, a mini-retrospective.

Little holds an M.A. and M.F.A. in painting from the University of Iowa, attended Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture (1981 and 1982), and has had residencies on Monhegan Island and at the Virginia Center for the Creative Arts. He is the author of Art of Katahdin and co-author with his brother Carl of Art of Acadia, Paintings of Portland, and Art of Penobscot Bay.

Do you want to be a #SoilHero by hiking up a mountain AND helping Acadia’s efforts to restore summit vegetation? Friends of Acadia is partnering with the park and Schoodic Institute to host a weekly Save Our Summits Volunteer Program, every Wednesday from June through September. This program invites tenacious hikers to bring bags of soil to the summits of Penobscot and Sargent Mountains to help with restoration efforts. Hikes run from 8:15 a.m. to 12:15 p.m., weather permitting. Advanced registration is required.

Rare to Common: An introduction to rare disease and new biotechnology that will bring hope to patients and their families

Thursday, September 5th at 7pm

Bar Harbor, ME – Rare diseases are rare, but rare disease patients are numerous. More than 300 million people globally are impacted by rare diseases. Join RDTC director and Bar Harbor resident, Cat Lutz, at the Jesup Memorial Library to learn the basics of rare disease, how she and her team have designed a unique approach to work with patients and families, and how JAX research in this area will expand in the coming years.

At the Jackson Laboratory, the Rare Disease Translational Center (RDTC) is not only working to shorten the road to therapeutics through precision engineering to treat and cure rare diseases, but also leveraging their insights to advance progress in common diseases such as Alzheimer’s disease and cancer.

Cathleen (Cat) Lutz, Ph.D., M.B.A. is the Vice President of the Rare Disease Translational Center at The Jackson Laboratory (JAX). With 25 years of experience in mouse genetics, Dr. Lutz has focused her research efforts on patient organizations and families diagnosed with rare diseases. The JAX Rare Disease Translational Center incorporates precision mouse models and broad-based drug efficacy testing to support investigational new drug (IND) enabling studies. She serves as the Principal Investigator of multiple NIH sponsored programs including the Center for Precision Genetics, The Somatic Cell Genome Editing Center, and Mouse Mutant Research and Resource Center. As a neuroscientist by training, Dr. Lutz has worked on models of the central nervous system such as Spinal Muscular Atrophy, Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) and Friedreich’s Ataxia. Dr. Lutz was recently awarded a 2021 Rare Impact Award by the National Organization for Rare Disorders.

Hook ‘n I Hooked Rugs Exhibit September 3-28

SOUTHWEST HARBOR—From Karen McFarland’s “Oh Buoy!” to Mary Hays’ “The Cove” the hooked rugs on display at the Southwest Harbor Public Library will delight with color and variety from September 3 through 28th. Members of Hook ‘n I, Mount Desert Island’s rug hooking group, have created original designs while also working from traditional and modern hooking patterns. The Hook ‘n I group was formed more than 15 years ago, and the group meets weekly from September to May at the library. The first meeting of this season will be on Thursday, September 12th from 1:00-3:00 p.m. Exhibitors in September will include Judith Burger-Gossart, Sugar Fenton, Patsy Fogarty, Bianka Fuksman, Mary Hays, Cookie Horner, Rosemary Levin, Karen McFarland, Betsy Patterson, Jan Reed, Liz Rosenfeld, Nancy Turner, Nancy Weingarten, Sandy Wilcox, and more.

Rug hooking is a traditional Maine craft. Years ago, rugs were hooked by local women both to produce needed articles for their homes and to sell for pin money. The Hook ‘n I members enjoy carrying on this tradition, creating beautiful rugs, pillows, purses, and other articles. We also welcome knitters, needlepointers, and those who practice other fiber arts.

“We’d love to add new people to our group,” says Nancy Weingarten, coordinator of the group. “Whether you have been hooking for a while, would like to learn, or are interested in fiber crafts in general, we’d love to have you join us. Just come on a Thursday afternoon!”

VIRTUAL WRITE ON! WRITING GROUP

Want support for your craft? The Write On! writer’s group has been meeting at the Jesup since 2014, and remotely during the pandemic. Each meeting, members may bring in up to 1200 words to read for feedback, and in turn offer feedback to others. Although each member doesn’t get to read work every time, the group shares the time fairly. The group meets on Zoom, and hold in confidence what is shared. This group welcomes adults 18 and up writing in many genres. There’s no homework–the only commitment is two hours on Saturday mornings.

PRAYER SHAWL MISSION GROUP

Welcoming all knitters and would be knitters…and crocheters! The Welcome and Care Team at the Bar Harbor Congregational Church UCC is hosting a weekly Prayer Shawl Mission Group every Saturday from 10 a.m. until noon at the Bar Harbor Congregational Church UCC. The intention of the group is to create a sense of community and a flow of Prayer Shawls for distribution to those in need of comfort due to illness, loneliness, or loss. Supplies and instruction will be provided to those with skills for knitting and/or crocheting and for those with a desire to learn.

Free Meal with the Police Department

NORTHEAST HARBOR—The Bar Harbor and Mount Desert Police Departments have set a date for a community lunch on Sunday, September 8, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

The event will take place at the Northeast Harbor Marina and is cohosted by the Neighborhood House.

This is free for all to attend, said Sgt. Soren Sundberg.

Sunset Cruise to benefit the SPCA of Hancock County

BAR HARBOR – Enjoy a two-hour sunset cruise while supporting the animals at the SPCA of Hancock County’s animal shelter.

The SPCA Critter Cruise will be held on Sunday, September 8, aboard Acadian Boat Tour’s 149-passenger vessel, the Acadia, and includes a Happy Hour hors d’oevres, raffles, and a cash bar, with all proceeds benefitting the animals. Tickets for the cruise are $60 each.

The cruise will depart at 5 p.m. sharp from the Atlantic Oceanside Hotel dock at 119 Eden St., Bar Harbor. Guests are encouraged to dress warmly and to arrive 20 to 30 minutes prior to departure to allow time to park and board the boat. Guests are required to check in at the ticket booth at 119 Eden St. to ensure the captain and crew have an accurate count of cruisers.

The Acadia will go along the shoreline of Bar Harbor and will include views of the summer mansions, Egg Rock Lighthouse, seals, harbor porpoise, and eagles. An Acadia Boat Tours experience naturalist will narrate the tour with history and anecdotes. The boat will stop in the bay during the last portion of the cruise to watch the sunset at 6:57 p.m.

The event will be postponed to Sunday, Sept. 15, at the captain’s discretion in the event of severe wind or fog. Pets are not allowed on the boat.

The event is made possible by Acadian Boat Tours and Atlantic Oceanside Hotel with support from Machias Savings Bank and Bar Harbor Bank and Trust.

“This will be a really fun and beautiful event. It will be a rare opportunity to see the Bar Harbor area from the water, enjoy some great food and drink while supporting the SPCA,” said Michelle Allvin, SPCA board president. “Please join us for this incredible excursion.”

MDI Hospital Invites You to Its Annual Meeting and Community Celebration, Wednesday, September 11

BAR HARBOR—Mount Desert Island Hospital invites you to join them at their Annual Meeting and Community Celebration on Wednesday, September 11th.

The annual meeting will take place via Zoom from 2-3 PM and cover annual reporting from the Board of Trustees and Senior Leadership. This meeting is open to the public.

The community celebration will take place from 4-7 p.m. at the Bar Harbor Club, also on September 11. This event is free and open to the public and will feature the 3rd Annual Hospital Auxiliary Silent Auction and Raffle, as well as award presentations for Healthcare Partner of the Year, Business Partner of the Year, Community Partner of the Year, and Volunteers of the Year. From 4-5 p.m., guests will be able to enjoy the silent auction and raffle, with the program and awards beginning at 5 p.m., passed hors d’oeuvres and drinks will be available throughout.

AUDITIONS FOR ACT’S HOLIDAY SHOW – BEST CHRISTMAS PAGEANT EVER

BAR HARBOR—Acadia Community Theater will be holding auditions for our holiday show, The Best Christmas Pageant Ever on Tuesday, September 10 and Thursday, September 12 at the Northeast Harbor Library.

Auditions will be held on both nights from 6 p.m. – 8 p.m., but it is suggested that those auditioning arrive early to register and warm up. There are fun parts for male and female children between the ages of 8 to 15 as well as character parts for adults between the ages of 30 and 65.

Children must be 8 years or older to audition. Audition materials can be found in advance on ACT’s website at acadiacommunitytheater.net.

The show will be directed by Mark Carignan and Jacob Sanner and produced by Patti Savoie and Jonathan Bender.

2024 MDIXC Relay Run

Please Join Us For The Inaugural MDIXC XC Relay Run!

MOUNT DESERT ISLAND—This is a great early season warm up race for Middle School Runners, and a fun activity for all elementary students, we would love to have you there!

When: Friday September 13 at 4:00 p.m.

Where: MDI YMCA with course being two loops around ball fields

Who: All ages welcome!

Course Length: Approximately 1.5 – 2.2 miles

What: Teams of 2, will have each person run the course around the ballfields (plus some), tagging off between runners.

Total run time of each team of two will be recorded.

Teams consisting of middle school runners from different schools will be entered in a lottery for a special prize.

NORTHEAST HARBOR—Join A Climate to Thrive and Kim Stanley Robinson to explore the important roles of place and story in addressing climate change and building resilience. Let’s celebrate our connection to the place we call home and discuss the narratives that can positively shape our coming decades. We hope you can join us!

Kim Stanley Robinson is often called one of the best living science-fiction writers, Robinson has long grappled with the topic of climate change in his novels, includingAntarctica, the Science in the Capital trilogy, and New York 2140. In The Ministry for the Future, published in 2020, Robinson explores both possible impacts and solutions that will likely play out in the coming decades through the lens of a fictional arm of the United Nations created specifically to address climate change. The novel received significant acclaim, and Robinson was given a special pass to the 2021 Conference of the Parties (COP) in Glasgow that provided him with the opportunity to attend the detailed negotiation sessions. In 2022, Robinson published The High Sierra: A Love Story, a memoir dedicated to a place that holds special meaning to Robinson. Mount Desert Island is another place that holds significance for Stan, as he has visited MDI annually since 1982, when he married his wife, whose mother was raised in Bar Harbor.

31st Annual David R. Harding Memorial Golf Tournament

BAR HARBOR—Mount Desert Island (MDI) Hospital and Bar Harbor Bank & Trust proudly announce the 31^st Annual David R. Harding Memorial Golf Tournament to be held on Thursday, September 26 at Kebo Valley Golf Club.

The David R. Harding Memorial Golf Tournament has been a signature event for Bar Harbor Bank & Trust, bringing together businesses and golfers from MDI and beyond to support many local organizations throughout the years. David Harding, for whom the tournament is named, was Chairman of the Board of Bar Harbor Bankshares for many years. Dave was a strong community supporter who was instrumental in launching the MDI YMCA. He loved golfing, and he loved Kebo.

In 2021, Bar Harbor Bank & Trust selected Mount Desert Island Hospital as the beneficiary for the tournament. Bar Harbor Bank & Trust and Mount Desert Island Hospital raised $15,000 to support the funding of a new MRI machine for the hospital. In 2022, recognizing its vital services to our community, Bar Harbor Bank & Trust selected Mount Desert Island Hospital to manage the tournament and be the primary beneficiary going forward, that year raising over $31,000. Bar Harbor Bank & Trust continues to support as the presenting sponsor, and its employees volunteer their time to help organize and staff the event.

Individuals looking to partake in this event can secure their spot for $100 per golfer, signing up in teams of four. Individuals or pairs that register will be grouped in a foursome after registration.

NORTHEAST HARBOR—On September 19 at 5:30 PM former Ambassador to Lithuania Anne Hall will deliver the second in the annual Dorothy and Jim Clunan Lecture Series at the Neighborhood House in Northeast Harbor. Her topic is “Poland and the Baltics, U.S. Allies and Partners in an Uncertain European Landscape.”

ASC Racial Justice Book Group

Are you interested in joining us? We are open to new members who want to share in the reading and the hard work that ensues as we examine the underpinnings of systemic racism and its effects on society and on each of us individually, in the ultimate hope that our studies can work toward change.

We have been meeting once a month on the second Tuesday of the month from 10:30- 12:15.

We started with the basic readings of How to Be an Antiracist by Ibram X. Kendi and The Sum of Us by Heather McGhee. We then spent many months delving deeply into The 1619 Project edited by Nikole Hannah-Jones.

Since then, we’ve read some James Baldwin, Colon Whitehead, Zora Neale Hurston, Eddie S. Glaude, Jr., Clint Smith and many others. We look forward in the next few months to reading some James McBride and Bryan Stevenson. We also share articles of interest that deal with the issues we’re facing.

The One Off Pub often has music and is often open until midnight. The location? 119 Main Street.

HAVANA

Every Saturday night its open, at 6:30 p.m, you can come hear the maestro Bob Lombardi. Maestro isn’t something we put out there for everyone. Havana is on lower Main Street.

IVY MANOR INN

Every day out on the lawn, weather permitting, the music begins at 2!

“Things To Do” is mostly curated by me looking for things happening in the upcoming week, which takes a lot of time and I truly do not know all that is going on.
