BAR HARBOR–– It was a bit of a sticky situation in Bar Harbor on May 17 for Officer Zack Kline but after investigating a reported theft of $21 worth of Laffy Taffy, Officer Kline determined that there was not enough evidence to sink his teeth into any criminal charges.

The following incidents occurred in Bar Harbor and Mount Desert last week according to the Bar Harbor and Mount Desert Police Department police logs, which is publicly released information.


Monday, May 13, 2024

The Bar Harbor Police Department received a motor vehicle complaint but no officers were in a position to intercept the suspect vehicle.

Officer Ted Cake handled a littering complaint in Mount Desert. Officer T. Cake could not locate the “litter” but through investigation learned that the town had picked it up and it was actually items for the spring cleanup that had been placed at the curb after the date of the event.

Sgt. Jerrod Hardy fingerprinted someone for employment purposes in Bar Harbor.

Officer T. Cake located a board in the middle of Route 102 in Mount Desert and removed it from the roadway.  

Lt. Kevin Edgecomb gave someone a ride from Northeast Harbor to the Jordan Pond House after their vehicle broke down at the Northeast Harbor marina.

Officer Amie Torrey performed a well-being check in Bar Harbor at the request of an employer. No further information or disposition was given.

Officer Torrey took a report of a disabled vehicle on Eden Street in Bar Harbor. A tow truck assisted with getting the vehicle going and out of the roadway.  

Someone reported a missing boat in Mount Desert, and it was located the next morning.

Following a traffic stop in Bar Harbor, Daniel Aho, 40, of Cumberland, was arrested for alleged operating under the influence.

While on a call in Bar Harbor, Officer Nathan Formby summonsed Eric Greene, 36, of Hallowell, for alleged operating after suspension.

Robert Damon, 68, of Mount Desert, was driving a 2009 Subaru Forester and pulling out of the Bar Harbor Banking and Trust lot onto Main Street in Northeast Harbor. Due to an illegally parked vehicle, Damon’s line of sight was obscured and he allegedly struck a Chevy pickup, no year given, that was being driven by Parker Richardson, 20, of Troy. There was no personal injury reported and both vehicles suffered minor damage.

Officer Zack Kline found a license plate in the middle of the road in Bar Harbor and was able to contact and notify the owner of the plate about it.

Officer Kline investigated a reported dog bite that occurred in Mount Desert and was reported by the MDI Hospital.

Mental Health Liaison Melissa Tozier assisted someone in Bar Harbor with a housing crisis.

Officer Kline responded to a complaint of dogs in a vehicle in Bar Harbor, located the dogs, and determined that they were fine.

Officer Kline served a protection order to someone in Bar Harbor.

Officer Kline served a protection order to another person in Bar Harbor.

Officer Kline responded to a report of trespassing in Bar Harbor and issued a no trespass warning to a woman.

Elliot Owens Miller, 23, of Bass Harbor, was driving a 2006 Honda Odyssey and was backing out of a parking spot in the Reel Pizza parking lot in Bar Harbor, when he allegedly struck a 2024 Jeep Compass that had been previously parked by Fred Lam, 29, of Tennessee. There was no reported personal injury. Both vehicles had moderate damage to the driver’s side rear quarter panels.

Following a motor vehicle complaint and subsequent traffic stop in Mount Desert, Officer Caleb Mora arrested Robert A. Coulombe Jr., 69, of Bangor, for alleged operating under the influence, alleged violation of conditions of release, and alleged operating after suspension. Coulombe was transported to the Hancock County Jail.


Wednesday, May 15, 2024

Officer Elias Burne investigated a complaint of threatening in Bar Harbor and determined that no direct threat had been made.

Officers assisted College of the Atlantic with the student-led protest march from the COA campus in Bar Harbor to the Village Green.

Sgt. Hardy responded to a request to have a vehicle moved from Main Street in Northeast Harbor but determined that the vehicle was legally parked.

Officer Liam Harrington received information from someone in Bar Harbor and is investigating that information.

Officer Kline responded to a complaint of a motorized bicycle traveling in a Bar Harbor neighborhood at high rates of speed but was unable to locate the suspect bicycle.

Officers responded to a Bar Harbor hotel for a report of a disorderly man. The man was given a trespass warning for the complainant hotel and was escorted to another hotel where he apologized and went to bed.

Officer Kline gave a man a ride from the MDI Hospital to his residence in Bar Harbor.

Officer Judson Cake tried to locate a person who was reportedly sleeping in a cemetery in Mount Desert but was unable to locate them.

Officer J. Cake investigated a noise complaint in Bar Harbor but determined it to be unsubstantiated.

Officer J. Cake responded to a report of a lost dog in Mount Desert, located the dog, and returned it to its owner.

Officers investigated an unattended death in Bar Harbor and determined it to be of natural causes.

Stephanie Hazard, 63, of Buxton, was driving a 2008 Toyota Camry and backing out of a parking spot in the Hannaford’s parking lot in Bar Harbor when she allegedly struck a 2014 BMW 428 that was previously parked by Jay Strojnowski, 60, of Bar Harbor. There was no reported personal injury. Both vehicles suffered minor damage to quarter panels.

Officer Kline performed a well-being check on a person in Mount Desert and found them to be okay.

Sgt. Chris Dickens responded to a report of two dogs running loose in the area of Indian Point Road in Bar Harbor. No further information or disposition was given.

Officer Kline responded to a motor vehicle complaint on the Eagle Lake Road in Bar Harbor but failed to observe any violations.

Officer Kline responded to a complaint of people swimming in Jordan Pond in Mount Desert but did not locate any swimmers.

Sgt. Soren Sundberg investigated a motor vehicle complaint in Bar Harbor. No further information or disposition was given.

Officer Troy Stanwood performed a well-being check in Bar Harbor and found the person to be all set.

Officer Torrey investigated a protection order violation complaint from a woman in Mount Desert and found that no violation had occurred.

Officer Stanwood investigated an assault complaint in Bar Harbor but determined that no assault had taken place.

Pursuant to an unrelated investigation by Officer Stanwood in Bar Harbor, Jared Felling, 38, of Michigan, was found to allegedly be in violation of failing to register as a sex offender. Felling was arrested and transported to the Hancock County Jail.


Friday, May 17, 2024

After conducting a traffic stop in Bar Harbor, Officer Stanwood arrested Wilder Young, 28, of Southwest Harbor for alleged operating under the influence. After further investigation, Young was summonsed for alleged driving to endanger, issued warnings for multiple other traffic infractions, and then released.

Officer J. Cake assisted the Southwest Harbor Police Department in Southwest Harbor.

Officer Kaleb Payson responded to a disorderly altercation in Bar Harbor. It was determined that no crime had occurred, but one person was removed from the property for the night.

An officer responded to a Woodbury Road address in Bar Harbor for an animal complaint. No further information or disposition was given.

An Ellsworth woman reported the theft of a tackle box from Main Street in Bar Harbor that had occurred on May 12.

Someone called the Bar Harbor Police Department asking what law gives cable companies the right to install cable lines on a private pole.

Officer Kline investigated a report of possible credit card fraud from a cruise ship passenger. Officer Kline determined that the event did not occur in Bar Harbor, but possibly in the town where the complainant lives.

Sgt. Dickens placed the crosswalk signs at the intersection of Ledgelawn Avenue and Park Street in Bar Harbor back in their original positions.

Sgt. Dickens responded to a report of a vehicle parked on Roberts Avenue in Bar Harbor for an extended period of time. No further information or disposition was given.

An officer responded to a dog in a car complaint in the area of Access Alley in Bar Harbor and determined that the dog was not in any distress.

Sgt. Sundberg assisted the Southwest Harbor Police Department with the service of some paperwork.

Officer Torrey took a report of road damage in Bar Harbor and notified DOT.

Sgt. Sundberg handled a complaint of a possible traffic hazard in Bar Harbor and addressed the issue with the involved company.

Officer Torrey received a motor vehicle complaint coming towards the island from Trenton. No further information or disposition was given.

Officer Stanwood assisted the Bar Harbor Fire Department at a fire scene in Bar Harbor near Hadley Point Beach.

Officer Payson provided two males a ride home from Bar Harbor to Seal Harbor.

Officer Stanwood responded to a loud noise complaint in Bar Harbor. The people involved agreed to move inside.

Officers responded to a Bar Harbor residence for a report of a domestic disturbance. After investigation, no arrests were made and one person was transported to their residence in Ellsworth.

A Bar Harbor resident was transported home from a facility in Bar Harbor.

Officer Mora handled a parking complaint in Bar Harbor.

Sgt. Dickens assisted the MDI YMCA with its annual Healthy Kids Day.

Officers spoke with an individual in Bar Harbor regarding a relationship matter.

Officer Mora removed some reported debris from the roadway in Bar Harbor.

Officer Mora investigated a scam complaint in Bar Harbor and determined that no crime had been committed.

Officer Mora handled a complaint regarding someone driving and damaging a vehicle on private property in Bar Harbor. The victim decided to handle the complaint civilly and declined to pursue criminal charges.  

Sgt. Dickens conducted a well-being check in the area of Edgewood Street in Bar Harbor and determined that the subject of the check was fine.

Lt. Edgecomb checked on an elderly woman at the Northeast Harbor Marina and determined that she was fine.

Sgt. Sundberg responded to a dogs in a car complaint in Bar Harbor and determined that the dogs were fine.

The Bar Harbor Police Department took a report of scooters operating on a public way but the scooters were not located.

Someone made a motor vehicle complaint in Bar Harbor and after locating and stopping the suspect vehicle, Officer Mora summonsed Steven Boyer, 60, of Bar Harbor, for alleged operating without a license and alleged violation of conditions of release.

Sgt. Sundberg took a complaint about property being missing from a Bar Harbor business. The complainant only wanted it on file.

Following a traffic stop in Bar Harbor, Officer Stanwood arrested Daniel Doane, 38, of Trenton, for alleged operating under the influence with two prior convictions which makes the charge a class C felony and transported Doane to the Hancock County Jail.


Sunday, May 19, 2024

Following a traffic stop in Bar Harbor, Officer Formby arrested Francisco Baez Garcia, 37, of New York, for alleged operating under the influence.

Officer Stanwood is investigating a report of an assault in Bar Harbor.

Officers responded to the Harborside Hotel in Bar Harbor for a report of a suspicious person acting disorderly. The person was moved along for the night.

Sgt. Dickens responded to a report of a person acting disorderly at a Bar Harbor campground. The person was warned not to return to the campground and moved along.

Officer responded to a domestic disturbance report in Bar Harbor. It was determined that the dispute was verbal in nature only and no crime had been committed.

Officer Payson investigated a threatening complaint in Bar Harbor and determined that no crime had been committed.

The Bar Harbor Police department took a motor vehicle complaint that is under investigation.

Officer Payson responded to a report of illegal campers in Mount Desert but the campers were gone before his arrival.


SOUTHWEST HARBOR AND TREMONT

The following incidents occurred in Southwest Harbor last week according to the Southwest Harbor Police Department police log, which is publicly released information.


Monday, May 13, 2024

A Southwest Harbor property owner reported to the police department that someone had contacted them and said that they had heard that the property may be for sale. The property owner found this to be odd and wanted to report it.

Wednesday, May 15, 2024

Officer Bradley Russell conducted a well-being check on a person at the request of a friend who had been on the phone with the subject of the check and had lost contact and not been able to get back in touch with them. The person was located and found to be fine.


Thursday, May 16, 2024

Chief John Hall and Officer James Kamorski attempted to locate a vehicle for the Maine State Police but could not find it.

Officer Kamorski responded to a loose dog complaint near the Corner Market, located the dog, and took it back to the police station where the owner came and retrieved it.

Chief Hall and Officer Kamorski responded with EMS to a medical alarm at a local apartment complex and discovered that it was a false alarm.

Officer Russell is investigating a littering complaint.

Officer Russell responded to a complaint of an unlicensed driver operating a motor vehicle but could not locate the suspect vehicle.


Friday, May 17, 2024

Officer Ryan Blakeney handled a call from a person stating that there was someone at their door asking to use the phone and they thought that it was suspicious. Officer Blakeney gave the suspicious person a trespass warning for the location for the night. The suspicious person got a cab and left town for the evening. 

Officer Kamorski served someone with a no trespass notice at the request of a resident.

Michael Slater, 77, of Bass Harbor, was backing a Dodge Ram, year unknown, out of a parking space at the Manset town dock when he allegedly struck a Ford F-350, year unknown, that was last operated by an unnamed person. There was no reported injury. Slater’s vehicle sustained damage to the left rear and the Ford sustained minor damage to the left rear.

Officer Kamorski received a call asking for more patrols at night around the complainant’s residence because people were coming into their yard at night and cutting the heads off of their tulips.

Chief Hall took a call from someone who had found a loose dog but the dog’s owner retrieved the dog while the complainant was still on the phone.

A local resident reported to the police department that he had lost his prescription Suboxone.

Officer Blakeney took a report from a pedestrian that a vehicle was operating in an erratic manner by driving by them fast.

Maine State Police Investigates Single-Vehicle Crash on I-95 in Bangor

BANGOR—On Saturday, May 18, 2024, at approximately 10:50 p.m., state police troopers responded to a single-vehicle crash on I-95 near Stillwater Avenue in Bangor. A 17-year-old lost control of a 2014 Ford F-250 on the wet roadways while attempting to pass another motorist before striking a guardrail.  A 17-year-old passenger, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was ejected in the crash. The passenger was taken by ambulance to Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center. The investigation is ongoing at this time. 


Fire Marshal’s Office Conducts Great Pond Fire Investigation

GREAT POND—On May 20, 2024, at approximately 5:00 a.m., the Aurora Fire Department responded to a residential fire at 23 Old Dam Way in Great Pond. Once on scene, the Aurora Fire Department notified the State Fire Marshal’s Office as it was determined to be a fatal fire where two bodies were discovered. Both bodies have been taken to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner’s where autopsies will be conducted. The State Fire Marshal’s Office is being assisted by the Maine State Police Major Crimes Unit North to help investigate the circumstance surrounding the fire and the deaths.
