SOUTHWEST HARBOR—Police in the Mount Desert Island town of Southwest Harbor assisted state agencies, November 18, arresting Danielle Jeanne Kelsen, 55, on a fugitive from justice warrant.

“As a result of the investigation into the circumstances of Janet Kelsen’s death, an arrest warrant was obtained charging her daughter-in-law, Danielle Kelsen (age 55) with second degree murder in violation of RSA 630:1-b, I(b), in that, she recklessly caused the death of Janet Kelsen under circumstances manifesting an extreme indifference to the value of human life by inflicting blunt head trauma,” New Hampshire Attorney General John M. Formella said, November 25. “Danielle Kelsen has also been charged with wiretapping and eavesdropping through intercepting oral communications in violation of RSA 570-A:2, in that, she willfully used an electronic device to intercept oral communications between herself and Janet Kelsen.”

Maine State Police assisted with the arrest.

Kelsen was arrested on Clark Point Road in Southwest Harbor. The New Hampshire warrant was for a charge of second degree homicide of Kelsen’s mother, Janet Rischeill Kelsen, 88, of Exeter, New Hampshire.

According to an earlier New Hampshire Department of Justice announcement, “Ms. Kelsen was found dead in her home on Front Street on February 9, 2025.”

New Hampshire Deputy Chief Medical Examiner Dr. Mitchell Weinberg ruled that Ms. Kelsen’s cause of death was blunt head trauma. The state declared it was a homicide.

The Portsmouth Herald and Seacoast Online New Hampshire newspapers said residents in the town of approximately 16,000 were “rattled” by her death.

At the time of Janet Rischeill Kelsen’s death, WMUR (a New Hampshire television station) reported that in an interview with the New Hampshire attorney general they were told “that when police arrived, they found the woman with significant facial injuries and she was pronounced dead at the scene.”

The news channel also reported that a relative of Janet Rischeill Kelsen had “called police for a medical emergency.”

According to Mount Desert Islander’s Kip Wing, the Maine State Police contacted Southwest Harbor Police about the warrant on November 17.

“Hall briefed officer Kristen Roulet on the warrant and Roulet was instructed to watch the house on Clark Point Road the next morning, Nov. 18, and report back with additional information,” Wing wrote.

Roulet watched the house to see if Kelsen left or if an orange Subaru arrived. Neither occurred prior to the state police staff’s arrival. Kelsen did not immediately leave the home when asked to, but entered state police custody without incident.

Formella stressed, “The charges and allegations against Danielle Kelsen are merely accusations, and she is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.”

“Following a preliminary hearing on being a fugitive from justice, the defendant is scheduled for a further hearing on the issue of extradition to New Hampshire before the Ellsworth District Court in Ellsworth, Maine on December 10, 2025. Following extradition to New Hampshire, the defendant is expected to be arraigned at the 10th Circuit Court – Brentwood District Division, at a date and time to be determined by the Court,” Formella said.

STATE POLICE PRESS RELEASES

These are the Maine State Police press releases from the last few days. The Bar Harbor Story will include these each week though most (and sometimes all) do not occur on Mount Desert Island.

Two Adults Killed, Children Injured in Early Morning Crash on Maine Turnpike in New Gloucester

NEW GLOUCESTER—On Wednesday, November 19, 2025, at approximately 4:26 a.m., Maine State Police responded to a two-vehicle crash on I-95 southbound near mile marker 71 in New Gloucester. Upon arrival, troopers located a serious crash involving a 2017 GMC Acadia towing a U-Haul trailer and a 2015 Audi SUV. The preliminary investigation indicates that the GMC, which was traveling southbound, became detached from the trailer ball remaining connected only by safety chains. The driver of the GMC pulled to the right shoulder and stopped, with the trailer still partially in the roadway.

Six people were in the GMC, including four children ranging in age from 7 to 14, all from Lewiston. Four occupants, an adult male driver, an adult female passenger, and two of the four children exited the vehicle and were attempting to address issues with the trailer when a southbound 2015 Audi SUV struck the trailer and the GMC from behind.

The adult female was pronounced deceased at the scene. The adult male driver suffered critical injuries and was transported to Maine Medical Center, where he later died. The two children who were outside the vehicle sustained minor injuries. The two children who remained inside the GMC also suffered minor injuries. All four children were transported to Maine Medical Center. Relationship information and family details are still being confirmed. Identities will not be released until verification is complete and next-of-kin notifications have been made.

The driver of the Audi, an adult male from Wales sustained minor injuries. He was transported to Maine Medical Center where he was treated and released. No charges are being filed against the driver at this time.

The dynamics and circumstances of the crash remain under active investigation.

Maine State Police would like to thank Gray Fire and Rescue, Auburn Fire and Rescue, Auburn Police Department, and the Maine Turnpike Authority for their assistance at the scene.

Fire Marshal’s Office Investigating Falmouth House Fire

FALMOUTH—The Maine State Fire Marshal’s Office is investigating a residential fire that occurred Monday, November 17, 2025, at a home on Red Oak Drive in Falmouth. The Fire Marshal’s Office was requested by the Falmouth Fire Department to respond to the scene. Crews arrived around 4:11 p.m., to find the home fully involved. No occupants were inside at the time, and no injuries were reported.

Fire Marshal investigators spoke with the individuals that had been staying at the residence. They advised that an accidental fire had occurred earlier in the day while an electric space heater was in use, and that the fire ignited a couch. The occupants reported they believed they had extinguished the fire, but it appears to have rekindled after they left.

Due to the extent of the damage the fire is being classified as undetermined. The investigation remains ongoing. No further information is available at this time.

Two Found Deceased in Wade Residence; Carbon Monoxide Suspected

WADE—The Office of State Fire Marshal and the Maine State Police are investigating the deaths of two individuals found inside a residence at 505 N. Wade Road in Wade on Tuesday, November 18, 2025. Troopers and emergency medical services personnel responded to the home at approximately 11:15 a.m., for a welfare check and confirmed that both occupants were deceased upon arrival.

Fire Marshal’s Office investigators were requested to respond. They determined that the furnace exhaust pipe inside the residence had been improperly installed and had become disconnected, causing exhaust fumes to vent directly into the home. Evidence suggests the victims likely died from carbon monoxide poisoning.

The victims have been identified as 64-year-old Brian Merchant and 56-year-old Laurie Ridgway who lived together at the residence. The Office of Chief Medical Examiner in Augusta will conduct examinations to determine the official cause of death.

The State Fire Marshal’s Office reminds Maine residents to ensure that working carbon monoxide detectors and smoke alarms are properly installed in their homes and that heating systems are regularly inspected. No further information is being released at this time.
