BELFAST—It wasn’t just a win for the Mount Desert Island High School Girls’ Cross Country Team on Saturday at Troy Howard Middle School; it was the sixth straight Northern Maine title.

“A beautiful thing about XC team championships is the convergence of singular individual effort culminating in team success,” said Coach Desiree Sirois.

The boys’ team was the runner up and Kulani Granholm took the girls’ overall win with a time of 19 minutes, 14.16 seconds.

Rebecca Rand, Marlee Catanese, and Antonia Burns also raced into the girls’ top 10 to bring MDI the regional victory for Class B North.

“The success of both programs was the outcome of combined hard work. Members displayed the island tradition of showing up for themselves, and each other in a culture that supports growth and sportsmanship,” Sirois said.

MDI’s girls finished with 28 points. Its next closest competitor was John Bapst (71 points). Both teams qualify for states, November 1, at Cony High School in Augusta.

Individual qualifiers also make the state meet if they finished in the top 30 at regionals.

MDI’s Seneca Haney, Tessa Kane, and Christina Mobley all finished in the top twenty.
